MK2 Octavia VRS

I was going to post a similar thread on these.
I've been trying to think what to replace my Avensis with and have been struggling.

I want to retain the same rough size and was looking at the Octy vRS and the Mondeo ST220.
Very different engines, but the same sized large hatchbacks with decent amounts of power.

I've heard the ST220 V6 sounds lovely, but it seems to be a lot more thirsty from what I've read and the N/A engine isn't easy to tune. The vRS is less thirsty and is more tuneable, but is probably less 'interesting'.
At a budget of £10k, is there anything else I should be looking at?
I've kind of discounted the 330 as I think servicing and running costs may beout of my budget longer term.

Motorway driving will see anything up to 35mpg for the Octy vRS.
I'll probably only average 30mpg for "general driving".

The engine is very tuneable.
By default it's 200bhp.
The same engine in the Golf is tuned to 210bhp.
A quite simple Stage 1 remap will easily give you around 240bhp.

The boot space on the Octy is amazing - you still get a good size car, but tons of storage space.

I had a Leon Cupra with the VAG 1.8T, so although the new engine is 2.0T I know the tuning potential is largely similar.
I suppose the Mazda 6 is similar in size but is again more thirsty havng the 2.5T from the Focus ST.

Really? Didn't know that. Just assumed.
Hmm.. ssems that is saloon only as well (according to Parkers).

Selling cars is easy, assuming you price it right.

Yea I can imagine that there are queues of people wanting the hassle of a ferry to the iow to pay Market value for a thirsty, sports orientated car whose previous owner lives on an island where the roads make cart tracks look comfy.

Or the OP could try a part ex plus cash and save himself a few headaches. Difficult one to call that. I'm not sure what the used market is like but a dealer ended up paying cash for our old Ibiza because they were having a job getting hold of decent used cars.

Mikehiow. I saw a mk2 vrs at fishbourne motors last week for 7550. Don't know if it's still there or what it's like as we were just driving past but it could be worth a look.

I've had my Mk2 vRS since September 2007. I've posted detailed thoughts here before, but to sum it's been ultra reliable, well put together and is inexpensive to run.

It's not without it's flaws though - I think it is noisy on the motorway (road noise), the damping could be better and I don't think it's terribly comfortable on long journeys - the seats are a bit hard and a little too narrow across the back and short in the cushion.

I don't do many miles these days so I've stuck with mine, but I suspect if I was back doing 500-750 miles a week as I used to I'd have traded it in for something else a bit more comfortable and refined.

If you're only talking of needing 5k then wouldn't it just make more sense to save fora month or 2 rather then sell and buy another car?

Nail on the head.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll go have a look down there in a minute.

Ironically, these guys also sold a 330 Sport just before I started looking at them.

It was on the road to the ferry terminal. It was parked on the corner near the main road from ryde to Newport. It had a proper price sign thing in the windscreen so I assumed it was fishbourne tryin to attract some attention because they're quite tucked away. I saw it on the tuesday after Easter. Sorry for the wild goose chase!

Take a £185k mortgage then. Must be the cheapest way to borrow money in terms of commercial finance.

Absolutely, far more sensible than trading in a £15k car after only 3 months of ownership, immediatly realising thousands of pounds in depreciation.

Unless, as is always the case on OcUK, there is more to it..

How do you suggest I do that?

House costs £xxx,xxx

Mortgage Lender requires xx% of that for a deposit

I need that £5k to reach that xx%.

Currently, it isn't thousands, and what I have lost is mostly dealer markup as the trade-in price has barely dropped since I purchased it.

LOL I wish when I got my mortgage 4 years ago I could have consolidated my car loan. Don't know what lenders Fox has in mind. As most only accommodate house improvements not a car purchase!

If you're close enough to the equity limit that 5k is going to push you over on a 180k mortgage, you should probably be reconsidering your priorities
