Very shocked at current VW build quality and price

I'm not so sure, I've a B5.5 passat, which has pretty similar/same parts as a Mk4 Golf interior if I'm not mistaken, I found the switchgear in the new golfs to be a touch nicer, but then that could have been the impression I got as a package as how modernised it is with touches of metal everywhere. I certainly like the B6 Passat's interior! *RUNS*

Speaking for VWs prices, their RRP is inflated in part because of poor exchange rate, and due to the horrendously long lead times at the moment, the used cars especially top models are holding their price like a mofo. Have a look at Mk6 GTIs for example!!!

My MK4 Golf creaks, rattles, flexes a plenty inside. Pants. Looks nice when you're not moving but it soon winds you up! lol.

The Dash itself is good. The centre console/gear gator area is a bit flimsey but it's my back door cards which make a racket.

I've no experience of a MK6 but I wouldn't expect much with most other manufacturers new cars being a mess of "new" even cheaper feeling plastic.

Experience of the MkV golf was very very bland (I imagine and expect the GTI to be a better drive-as long as its not the 2.0 MkIV)
It ticked every box of getting from A to B. Nothing more, nothing less.
Don't understand the perceived quality of VW's, but everyone who isn't a 'motor enthusiast' appears to believe they are worth several thousands above any other car in the same bracket.

They seem to have their marketing down to a tee and as a company that owns several marquees they appear to be doing a pretty good job of segregating the different market sectors.

You could always try a different manufacturer maybe?

I'm a huge Alfa fan, yet my next car will only be an Alfa if one of 2 very specific models appears before me at a great price. I'm also considering a few other cars, maybe a 5cyl. 4x4 Audi, maybe an MX5...

Life's to short to be a fanboy.

There was a huge thread about this a while back - about VWs and the perception of quality. Needless to say it was fanboys abound!

I'm the opposite, I've gone Peugeot - Ford - Citroen - Seat - Alfa - Ford - Saab :D

Which 2 models are you considering Biggles?

golfs obviously aren't over priced or they wouldn't sell by the bucket load and be on their 6th edition

I think the problem is that people see a Golf on a forecourt with every conceivable option, priced at £30k and assume that is how much all Golfs cost.

Its not that hard to get a standard hatchback up to those prices, you can get a Ford Focus Diesel up to 30k if you try hard.

Not quite sure what your point is - if you spec leather, sat nav, xenons etc, yes, you can get it up to those prices. But the point it - people don't spend £30k on a Golf, or a Focus for that matter, so why people bother saying "£30k on a golf is madness" when nobody really pays that anyway is somewhat baffling.

With 1 mins search on Autotrader, I turned up 172 Golf v6s with leather for sale. Who's says that nobody buys them.

You can at RRP, but you will only be paying about £22k MAX. Ford discount off RRP HEAVILY (read 20-30%). Whereas VW do not.

Build quality (interior) is pretty damn important IMO, I would base a car choice on this if needsbe.

The reason I have a Mk1 ZS is because the Mk2 was truly horrific in the way it was put together.

I quite like MGs, but to choose one for it's interior build quality is pushing things a bit...

You get many MkIV owners trying to convince themselves that the reason they won't buy a MkVI is that they're not very good. Very few will admit that the real reason is that they couldn't afford one.

The real reason is that they have realised how stupid purchasing a Golf is once they have done it the once and the next car they get is going to be a good one, not a Golf.

156 2.5 V6 or GTV 3.0 V6, they would need to be fairly youthful (8 year old at most) and appear at a good price, maybe with something broken that would cost a fortune to fix but I can DIY cheap.

Other than that, like I say, I want to try something else. I left BMW out of that list because unless I go back into the mid 90s, I'm not getting anything other than a 4-pot, I'd never hear the end of it.
