Its because its not directly related to the Gregorian calender IIRC. Sometimes it falls on 13th/14th...

Funnily enough, my local Gurudwara is changing the Nishan Sahib today, celebrating Vaisakhi tomorrow, and doing the Nagar Kirtin the following week! :p

From BBC Website:

Sikh calendar for 2010
All dates are shown using the Gregorian (Western) calendar. Most Sikh festival dates are now determined by the Nanakshahi calendar, which gives fixed dates for festivals. Some festivals are still fixed according to the older solar calendar and the dates of these vary from year to year.

Gurudwara - Sikh place of worship.

Nishan Sahib - The holy Sikh flag. It gets changed every year on the day of Vaisakhi.

Vaisakhi - Sikh celebration of the birth of Khalsa.

Khalsa - The "Bill of Rights" (if you will) for Sikhs. It recognises a Sikh who follows the disciple and text from the holy teachings.

Nagar Kirtin - a celebratory walk, to celebrate Vaisakhi. This usually involves thousands of Sikhs walking through the streets offering free (veg) food and (non-alcholic) drink. A bit like a carneval. :)

Thanks. I was in Handsworth during a Nagar Kirtin once. My wife and I stopped to watch (well OK, we didn't have much choice because all the traffic was immobile for at least half an hour) and I found it very interesting. :)

Some of those older Sikh dudes have serious beards.

Yes there are - be scared, VERY scared LOL! Jks, no bombs in our turbans, promise ;)

Reminds me of some joke soon after 7/7 - guy with a turban and large backpack on the tube, praying deeply. When everyone starts getting really worried, he jumps up and opens his jacket to reveal the message on his shirt "Don't freak - I'm a Sikh!" :p

And Sukh, you just made me really hungry with that pic!! ^^
