Intel Core 2 extreme QX9650 3ghz

I fancy getting the above titled CPU to replace my Q9300. I know my mobo will take it but will there be a decent performance increase too??

Depends what speeds you clock it to compared to your current Q9300. What speed is it running at?

That said there should be a good increase in certain games that make more use of clock speed rather than number of cores.

Doesnt that cpu cost like £500+? How much are you getting it for? You can get a Core i7 930 and decent mobo for less than that.

Anyway about the question, It all depends if you plan to overclock or not. If the Q9300 isn't OCed and you OC the QX9650, you will get a decent performance increase.

You can pick up a QX9650 for about £220 on ebay but I know they dont have the E0 revision available which the Q9650 does. Meaning you would prob be better off picking up a Q9650 (E0) because it will run cooler and give you more headroom for overclocking. And if you are planning on picking up a brand new QX9650 then Temi is right just look at an i7 instead. I think you can pick up an i7 960 for around £400 (if you shop around) which would blow chunks out of the QX9650 and then take its mother out for dinner!

If you overclock - then not as clear cut.Partic. if your existing chip will get to 3.4. If so boost?Yes. but massive?No.

If it's a 'free' upgrade then go for it.

But if it's going to cost you say £80 or more to upgrade probably best saving for an i7 instead

I dont believe there is any major differences, i got a qx9650 and i can do 4.1ghz @ 1.5v (410x10)easily, but for a 24/7 machine i just set it to 4.038 which i would say is safe. if you get a cpu for cheap sure test it out but as said earlier i am sure there i7 that would give you a better performance or the same but future proof.....
