Just a heads up, 4.2 is now out


Change Log:

* Fix: Missing drive in the warning bubble for detected infiltrations on Windows NT
* Fix: A standard user with UAC enabled could not stop the on-demand scanner when run as administrator
* Fix: Crashes of the ESET engine on multi-core machines with SSL scanning enabled
* Fix: Intermittent crashes of Windows Live Mail with integration enabled

I notice it updates 'program modules' every few weeks but not the main program itself. Bit odd as it should be a basic thing surely?
 
Could have sworn there was a thread on this the other day. :confused:

Ditto the self-update mentions. Perhaps Eset don't do it in case it becomes some kind of vulnerability? People could trick NOD32 into taking program updates from dodgy servers and get control of peoples' computers that way. But that doesn't make sense because the definition updates would be the same surely? :p

When I first got Vista x64 I had problems upgrading NOD32 from one version to another so I rang the Eset UK helpline. The guy I spoke to couldn't help and said to wait for the next version of NOD32 which should fix more problems and be more compatible.

He also told me that they inform their customers about a new version of NOD32 in phases/batches so the servers aren't hammered by all their British customers downloading a new version of NOD32 at the same time. They obviously don't know about people like me who regularly check the updates page every so often. :D

Yeah I made on about v4.2 but this is a little newer again :)
 
This is the reason.
The answer is simple - because we want to protect our customers and whittle down potential issues to the bare minimum. Minor builds usually only contain fixes to small issues that have been reported and it's not worth installing them for the majority of users not having any issues addressed in newer builds.

Since unlike other software, the security software is tightly integrated with the operating system, upgrading the whole program to a newer version may lead to serious problems. ESET releases a program component update (PCU) only after it has been used for a long time and all less or more severe issues reported by users have been remedied. However, particular modules, such as advanced heuristics, archive support, self-defense etc. are updated automatically with signature updates after they've been tested thoroughly in the ESET's lab and users downloading pre-release updates have not reported any issues during the testing period.
