so tonight.. i received a message from 0013478502887

it says

virgin media customer: we have noticed you have downloaded illegal content. due to our new policy your Internet will be shutdown in 72 hours.

now funny thing is im not the one paying the bill for VM.. im not on any papers.. my phone pay n go is on t mobile etc... do you think its a scam/joke message ? as it has no real meaning to it.. i cant find who the phone number belongs to or anything.. any one else received something like this?

It's probably just a scam thing spamming phones, I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if they can't have your number and you don't pay the bill :p

I got one the other day saying I could claim for an accident that had never even happened, I deleted it though so not sure if the number is the same.

I think it's one of those scams where you ring the number and it charges you like £10 a minute.

hmmm :/ spoke with my mate.. and he said he got a warning message too.. really confused atm :) as the pay n go card is like 3 months old so theres no way they could get the number :) meh it probably is a scam.. too late to be bothered by this x] thanks for answers ill see after 72 hrs ;D

I'm also not aware of Virgin or any ISP doing things like this anyway.

100% Deff. wouldn't be dealt with in this fashion. If it was a serious breach of the T&C they would cut you off immediatly - otherwise you'd get an email first and if you didn't reply to that then a letter asking you to call them.

1) If you downloaded illegal material, it'd be the police or MI5 at your door at 4am. You wouldn't just get a text from VM.
2) If, as I suspect, they meant to say you'd downloaded content illegally (there's a difference) then they wouldn't text, wouldn't cut you off and that'd be the end of it. Oh, and downloading isn't illegal - uploading is.
3) Delete and forget.

:D

The nuber is for google's HQ. They probably just want to you into install their new internet and sent the wrong message, D'oh.
See this thread for more info!

i see ;)

no idea what time the message came.. as the phone was in offline mode..
police for downloading ? dont think so x] you can kill someone and all you'd get is a police woman ;)
sharing is illegal and i am sure i haven't shared/downloaded anything that can be illegal..

:o

I think you misunderstood my distinction. There's not much you can download that constitutes 'illegal material', and the stuff that does fall under that category (bomb making instructions in Arabic, naked sexy time movies starring under 3s, etc) does in fact generally result in a friendly visit from your neighbourhood doughnut muncher. ;)

Is it possible one of your flat mates is ****ed off with you whoring the bandwidth for your films all day/night/week? :)

The number is probably a free SMS service.

no chance.. living in a family house only 2 people access the net on the daily bases.. and im 99% sure the other one is not downloading it probably is a scam.. :) we'll see after "72hrs" which again is a bit of crazy time.. i mean if we miss a bill the net/tv/phone is switched off in 4-8hrs nowhere near 3 days
