I take it all you want it for is browsing the web? As you are going back packing i'd keep it cheap... As its more than likely to get bashed around no matter how careful you are! Also its less desirable if its a "s**tter" (no offence)
Thats my thoughts anyway you can probably pick one up for sub £200
Something to think about!
I'd say Samsung NC10! But I have two, so that's not surprising really.
My black one has W7 Pro on it and has been taken to uni every single day this year, never missed a beat, the only thing I've done to look after it is every night turn it on when I get in and flatten the battery, before leaving it on charge overnight. I try to not run it off the mains either. Other than that it's been bashed around in my bag with nothing but a little neoprene sleeve to protect it from the elements and it's been fantastic.
I've just got another one, but White. I've installed a touch screen and OSX on it, so far it's been a great little project.
My white one was £225 second hand, which was over the odds really, I missed a couple on ebay that went for around £170, but they were missing bits or damaged. This one is hardly used and immaculate, and had been upgraded to 2gb RAM. White one's also generally sell for more than the black ones as they're less common.
I hav used asus, sony, toshiba, dell, ibm almost all the laptops over the years and i think asus laptops are very good in terms of reliability and long use. Although i like toshiba more but with your budget i think asus is the best option for you.
Was in the market for an NC10 myself, but in the end (yesterday infact) I plumbed for an MSI netbook. Personal preference really, but I prefered the styling and it feels a more solid product to me. Got a Wind U100 for £189 (new) off the highstreet which I was pretty happy with. Same highstreet chain also has the U135 for £229.
Asus are really nice. Their netbooks are pretty much the standard against all others are judged
Get the extended battery version (8 hours, or even the 11 hours version if you are lucky). And keep in mind a 2 gig upgrade could be worth it (although memory is cheap).
Which one then depends on the price, availability and features (although there will be little variations, aside from better or worse battery life).
Oh yeah, just make sure you go with matte screen (which most netbooks have), non-glossy.
I loved my NC10. But then I'm hitting the upper market now. Also keep in mind that theolder generation netbooks aren't great at video decoding, and the resolution isn't great (but still usable). The new Ion platforms (especially the Ion2 / N450) are much better as a laptop alternative. But of course, it's not gonna be £200.
Just got a used NC10. Apparently it comes with 320GB HDD upgrade and 2GB memory, with a 2nd brand new 6 cell battery, a mouse, a new carry bag, and a UK-US adapter (which I do need) and the original 160GB HDD included all for £250.
Is this a good/average/bad deal providing every works out? It was listed as new and the pictures seem decent.
