ASUS Radeon HD 5870 Sets GPU Speed Record of 1525 MHz (core)

In an overclocking feat by XtremeSystems community members Elmor and Kinc, an ASUS EAH5870 MATRIX Radeon HD 5870 graphics card was able to achieve a mind-boggling core speed of 1525 MHz (core) from its default speed of 894 MHz, and AMD reference speed of 850 MHz. This translates into 70.58% over default speeds, and 79.41% over reference speeds. The not-so-relevant memory overclock was 1300 MHz (4.9 GHz effective), an 8.33% overclock. The card was cooled using liquid-nitrogen evaporators.

This wasn't a "hit-and-run" feat, either. The stability of the GPU at 1500 MHz was proven with a run of 3DMark Vantage, where it scored P29342 points at the performance preset. The rest of the bench comprised of an Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition six-core processor running at 4492.9 MHz, at 1.52V, also cooled by liquid nitrogen, ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator GTX DDR3 memory, and Antec 1200W power supply. Impressive - but I would have thought such an overclock would have produced a better 3d mark score ... I get 24.5k myself with my 295.

150fps, for about 3 minutes till the LN2 is gone

These things interest me more for the achievable speeds on a given process and design, and less so for the actual performance because, meh, LN2 speeds mean nothing to anyone except what, 100-200 high end benchers who find 3dmark to be a sport.

The memory clock is quite funny though, wouldn't you, if you were going for that kind of bench, volt mod the memory and run it with silly voltage for 10 minutes to get some insane memory speeds, its not like he minds risking killing the card is it.

i bet your using GPU accelerated physx oh and a 295 is dual GPU

Turn physX off and run it again if you want to compare directly.

Lol yeah by the looks of it, although saying that the picture is too small to track whats plugged into what :S

The PSU they use seems abit OTT for that system as well to be fair

Yes, you're right - I am using PhysX, I've also got the processor oc'd to 4GHz, so that contributes to the overall score. So it's not a direct comparison at all. I just thought that for the sake of 6k extra marks it's a lot of risk in terms of money etc.

But, as I said, it looks like an impressive experiment!

Default vantage scores on these is around 16-18k, so over 30k with a single card overclocked this much is brilliant.

Wish I could afford a Rog Matrix 5870 and Ares 5970 to trifire on my upcoming R3E motherboard

Odhran these guys dont buy the hardware a lot of them get given it. Xtreme systems is a haven for people looking for the best and probably has more ln2/helium users than anywhere else on the web.

Fug also achieved a similar OC on the msi lightening 1gb, he showed a picture of 4 msi lightnings together new in there boxes.....im guessing he didn't buy them as from msi's point 4 x $500 is bugger all for the amount of marketing they will get out of it.

Wish people would give me stuff like that and 3 spare to blow up
