At the moment I've got a canon powershot with 3.2 mega pixel lens and I think its time to upgrade so me son can have this. I've been doing some research and it appears the Fuji S1500 is a nice replacement being small, takes good pics and is relatively cheap too.
Its gonna be used for general photography, holiday snaps, groups of ppl, singletons, etc indoors and outside, but also for fairly close in work say, 3"-6" away for closeups in conjunction with a tripod and remote shutter cable (if this can be fitted) and good lighting.
What do ppl here reckon and are there any alternatives available for roughly the same money that don't require a loads of fiddling with settings/modes, etc to get a decent pic.
Cheers for the info.:)

Should be more than capable, if you can strecth to it though I'd recommend the Panasonic FZ38, have had a few bridge cameras in the past (mainly kodak) and have had a play with a few fuji cameras as well and the panny by far is the best one I've used.

As for remote shutter, it's quite rare on most bridge cams and I doubt the fuji does it either, can get around this though by using timer instead (if for macro shots).

I had a play with an FZ38 in a retail shop the other day and I must admit, I'm impressed. The way everything is set out I found it easy to navigate all the options and the imgae quality was very good even when the camera is set to auto mode which makes it easy for the missus to use it as well. Decided to get one of these even though its £100ish more than I wanted to spend. thanks for the info mate.:)

I've got a Fuji S1500, there's no remote shutter although there is a self timer.

I actually bought it because for a camera in it's price bracket (I only paid £120 for it) it had quite a lot of adjustment.

I did look at the FZ38 but didn't want to spend the money at the time. I have since bough a Nikon D60 :).

No problem, glad I could help!

Hey buddy, have you had a chance to properly play around yet?
I am looking to purchase a camera this month, and the FZ38 caught my eye. It gets good reviews and the images look great, would you still recommend it?

How long does it take to write images (RAW or JPG) to memory card?

Just got it today. Luckily one of the guys at work has one too so setting it up was easy. I'd say it took all of a few minutes to start getting reasonable pics and me daughter who does photography at college really likes the options and general performance.. Personally i can't recommend it yet as I haven't had it long enough to voice a fair opinion but I think I've made the right choice. With everything set on auto, clear sharp and colourful pics are a doddle and its so easy use its criminal!:D

WRT writing images to the memory card do you mean from say, a pc to the camera's memory card via a usb cable, if so I'll have a go and see roughly how long it takes.

FYI the S1500 is £97 in Asda atm. I bought a 1730 not long ago and it does the job, the manual controls are pretty limited though.

Sorry, I mean when you take a picture in say; RAW or JPG, how long does it take before you can take another one, i.e how long to clear the buffer between shots?

Reason I ask is another camera I was looking at (Fuji HS10) takes 3 - 5 seconds to write a RAW file to memory card, within this time span you are restricted from taking further pics.

I haven't read about it in any reviews so I assume it is fine. But if you have a spare moment a quick test would be most appreciated.

Right, just had a chance to have a go at this. All I did was set up in auto, point, click and try to click again straight away and kept doing this. The max time I encountered was still less than a second I reckon.

Only time camera will take awhile to process is when you do long exposure shots, other than that it's rather fast!

Faster SD card will help, mine is only a class 4 but even that is fine for taking RAW pictures, not much of an extra delay over JPEG.
