Licence renewal

The driving license photocard is a total crock of crap IMO. What's the point of splitting the driving license into two parts, neither of which is acceptable by itself? The photos are of such poor quality that they are next to useless anyway, you can barely recognise someone from it let along spot any changes that have happened in ten years.

I recently went through this, they send a letter which really is a bit of a mixed message.

On the one hand they say you get fined £1000 (but it dosn't say what for)
On the other hand it says not to worry if you've not renewed before the expiry date unless you are medically or legally not allowed to drive (in which case you'd not be allowed to drive anyway)

Also it was based on the date i first applied for my provisional, i'd expected it to be on the date i passed my test. Bit of a faff all in all but they got it back to me pretty quick.

It's not the DVLA that issues the £1000 fine, its the police if they stop you and you can't produce the valid ID.

It's not that common to be fined even if your stopped as most police officers think the money goes to the DVLA - as soon as more police forces figure out that they get the £1000 I'd expect it to become far more common.

haha I have the same letter, it was like £1000 fine maybe

Also mine was the same, passed in Dec 2000 yet licence was valid from provisional date April 2000, could have saved me £20 for an extra 8 months
