Cinema Vs Stay at home

I disagree with anyone saying you can match a cinema's experience for even thousands, my home cinema system is far from poor and cost ~3-4k, and for precision is better than a cinema yes, but for downright power cannot touch it. There was a thread on possibly avforums a couple years ago where someone tried to recreate the cinema experience (ie creating a massive bass cellar beneath the room etc) and said even after spending 5 or 6 figures on it, it still didnt quite match up to it.

I still love going to the cinema and as i say, I dont have a shabby home cinema setup!

Agreed nothing can beat a trip to the cinema for a good film.

I love going the cinema every week :)

Glad I don't have kids to push up the cost :p 2 premier tickets are £8.50 and we take our own snacks! Only buy premier tickets as I get them on my lunch so we don't have to queue out the door at 5:30pm like everyone else on a Wednesday!

Orange Wednesday 2 for 1 deal

There's your mistake there. These deals often attract the chavs and ****wits from society.

I normally go Saturday morning/early afternoon to the cinema with a few mates. Never had any issue and often have half the cinema to ourselves. Aterwards we just chill in a restaurant (Pizza hut, Chiquitos etc). It's all good!

I can do the same at home, and TBH I do prefer being in my own house; but it's nice to get out once in a while. Plus if you have a good cinema and know the busy/not busy periods for the cinema then you are in for a good time.

Edited to add: Going to the cinema outside of any special deal/promotion to watch a 3D film is often chav-free anyway as the ****ers can't afford the ticket costs.

On the other hand a monthly membership to cineworld costs £13.50 which is fantastic value and equated to perhaps one or two dvds. I don't understand the compulsion for people to suddenly need food when they go to the cinema. If you must eat/drink then buy it at a shop and take it in with you. I'd take the cinema over watching a film at home any day.

i sometimes go to the cinemas twice a week...
its all about the butterkist cinema sweet popcorn.. 99p for a nice big bag and tastes just as good (if not better) than cinema popcorn. was on offer at Sainsburys a while back for 50p a bag, so i bought 10 bags :p

the most expensive ticket i've come across is £12.40, to go see alice in wonderland in 3D at Staines. did orange 2 for 1 though, but still, it costed £6.20 each

Am I the only one that is shocked that the orange 2 for 1 wasn't used for the children aswell?

I found that a bit odd too, they must have had friends they could yoink another code off of!

I go to the cinema reasonably regularly (despite having a nice seat, 42" plasma and reasonable surround system) because it is much better, usually on orange wednesday and usually blagging a student ticket. I even buy a large popcorn (why buy all the other tat) and it will probably still come to around £8. Having said that I wouldn't go if I couldn't blag student prices or 2 for 1 as that would work out at almost double!

Me and my GF go to the cinema loads, pretty much anytime we're together we go for Orange Wednesday (both on Orange so it works out good), about £2.50-£3 each. Very rarely buy sweets (well, I don't :D) and you can always go to the supermarket beforehand.

Providing you don't go late in the evening then it's not always busy and I've very rarely had a poor audio/visual experience.

I don't know why people have to insist on eating and drinking constantly through a film anyway. Just eat and drink before you go? Then you don't need to go for a wizz half way through the film, missing the film and disturbing everybody who has to stand up to let you pass. Its only on for an hour and a bit.

Love going to the cinema but also hate it for the above.

going to the cinema isnt like what it used to be, most people now have huge tv's or even projectors at home, you sit closer anyway at home so its the same visual experience. although i doubt anyone will have the same sound quality at home 5.1 is more than enough through a half decent amp or system.

plus you can get movies for free now in any quality you want up to 1080p, although piracy is a huge problem, it will hopefully urge, cinema's and dvd retailers to lower prices. i have a collection of over 300 dvd's maybe even more and i havent bought a dvd in over 3 years, i just simply download movies now and store them on a hard drive. i think about how much money i spent on all those dvd's and what i now get for free, it is a waste of money.

I spent £16 at the cinema this eve, the picture was was out of focus (amc birmingham, always out of focus, lazy ****** projectionists drive me mental), £6 for a ticket and then £10 for snacks.

All in all the cinema experience is naff, which is a shame. I love the big screen, but as a package it's expensive, annoying (technically - low sound, out of focus, often a bad image quality, grainy reel re-runs with hair and whatnot, wobbly picture), then you have to put up with the rabble. No es bueno.

Each to their own i guess.

I go monday nights, £3.70 to get in, 50p to park the car.

Snacks or whatever else ain't my thing, i chomp when i get back home.

Only thing that does bug me some, is they made monday half price last year. Loughbough being a student captial, you have to put up with talking, phones, the constant toilet runs, and the paper rattle through the entire film...

Id go back to paying full price on mondays to avoid all of that, monday being the only night i can make it to the flicks.

i feel bad, i work in the cinema and when i have to tell people that they have to pay nearly £10 for a hot dog a drink and a bag of sweet i feel like i should let them punch me in the nuts or something.

however, i do still enjoy the cinema experience but orange wednesday is not the time to go! i'd suggest early in the week. i know its cheaper on a wednesday, but thats when all the chavs are going to go.... =[

also, take you own stuff in.

you can grab a bag of sweet, popcorn and drinks from asda for less than a fiver.... cinemas can't stop you vringing these in. they can only stop hot foods... thats a handy tip to know

Yet exactly the opposite is happening if you look at the current 3D trend. Cinemas are charging extra for 3D and I'm not entirely sure why other than the fact that it's currently an experience unique to the cinema. Surely they couldn't be justifying the increase on the cost of the new equipment as that expenditure was an investment to be paid back over the next decade or more. It should cost the studios less as they will (eventually) no longer need to produce costly prints for all the cinemas. The projectors cost less to run, both from an energy standpoint and from a staff standpoint.

It's possible that the studios take a bigger cut for the 3D films but I'm not too sure if this is the case or not.

Also, I do realise that the glasses aren't free either but surely if you're reusing glasses there should be a certain reduction.

Wow, that is excessive, we don't do hotdogs but for a medium drink, medium popcorn and a bag of malteasers it'll set a customer back €8.40 which seems to be lower than any of the other cinemas near us.

Comparing prices to Asda though is silly, of course they're going to have cheaper prices as they can amortise the cost of their operation over a larger amount of stock and they can buy in massive bulk and thus cheaper stock. There's no way a cinema could compete with that.

I prefer watching a full 1080p HD movie on my Pioneer Kuro rather than in the cinema. Yeh the experience is different, but the quality in the cinema isn't amazing.

Local cineworld here is similar prices to the ones the OP specified baring the parking costs. It has a massive car park which is free to park in as its shared with other shops/places.

Luckily for me, a 24 hour ASDA is across the road so you can go in there, spend £2 buying a bag of malteasers and a bottle of cola then stash them in your bag/gfs bag until your inside lol.

Cineworld in hull charges £3.50 for a bag of malteasers and £2 per bottle of coke. Even 2 scoops of icecream is £5 lol

It use to be a cheap night out when compared to a meal but thats changing now, atleast where I live anyway.

I go to the cinema about 10 times a year. Preferably Screen 11 at O2 Vue as it's bloody mahooosive and the sound can get uncomfortably loud. Totally different experience to home cinema.

Price isn't too bad £5.60 for students. We always buy snacks and drinks from somewhere else.

Also, the cinema is always pretty much empty every time we go, which is great.

I like to go the Odeon whenever possible but the sheer garbage that has been released so far this year hasn't made me want to go... yet :p
