Morning,

Since Greece is on the virge of going bust is it still ok to go on holiday there? The Missus and I want to go back to Skiathos later in the year but don't want to be sold off to help sort out the country.

Is the Euro still strong compared to the £? So would everything be expensive or would they be cheap since they're in a financial mess and will try and entice people over?

Cheers

:D

yeah it's a fantastic place. We went there 3 years ago and have wanted to go back ever since. Went to Santorini 2 years ago but it was too touristy and busy compared to Skiathos. Plus I broke my finger in a freak swimming/big wave inncident!?

Going to Cyprus this summer, can't be bothered to worry about the fx rate as there's nothing I can do about it. Besides, it's a holiday, it's meant to be expensive and I'll worry about how much it cost when I get back!

My in laws live in Greece and came and visited last weekend and I asked them about how things were out there.

Never mind the exchange rate, it's the prices of everything has gone up substantially in Euros over there as well.

I think he said VAT is now either 20 or 21% and booze and fags have been taxed an extra 20%.

He says a large bottle of lager is now £2.50 and a packet of fags is £4.50 :(

It's getting so expensive they may have to move countries soon!

EDIT: When we first visted them 10 years ago, fags were 90p per packet and a large bottle of lager was £1 in the bars or 24p with 8p for the empty bottle at the supermarket.

Been 100% serious that really is sad to hear sounds like even local and remote greek places have sold out to tourist. Very sad to hear , greece was such a great place like you say 5 - 10 years ago

If you've got that attitude to holidays why not go somewhere really nice!

Yassas!

Greece is my second home and I love it, you will never be disappointed going over there.

I just wish they had an economy that could provide me with a career as good as the UK can.

If you can I highly recommend Salonika/Halkidiki.

Been to Greece 15 times now. Damn parents :p. Pretty much not enjoyed it until I started getting older. Last 2 holidays, one in the Peloponeese and last years in Lesbos were both stunning and fantastic. Food is great, people are generally great, and if you go to the right places, you won't see another Brit in sight. I recommend it. I've also been to Skiathos, tiny island. Had to land there and then get the ferry to Volos. Be warned, don't poo yourself when landing, the runway is very short metres long and you think you will end up in the sea!

Let me get this straight: I am not rich, nor have I ever claimed to be. I just feel that worrying about the exchange rate on holiday is a fruitless exercise, unless your name is George Soros.

Exchange rate risk can have a HUGE effect on your holiday though! If I did last years trip this year instead of last year it would have cost me an extra £600!

It is absolutely the right thing to think about when chosing a holiday destination.

Difficult, when your ethos would rule out the following countries as a holiday destination.

Austria
Belgium
Finland
France
Greece
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Portugal
Spain

Flights and transport to countries further afield would inevitably involve extra costs that outweigh any potential exchange rate advantage. This is especially true considering that the pound sterling is weak against not only the Euro, but also the USD (used by many countries in addition to the USA, of course) and many other global currencies.

Yes, you went to Australia...but your flight cost you several hundred more £ than it would have to fly to a Euro zone country, and it probably took you two days to even get there.

I'm not saying dont go somewhere because of exchange rate risk (Heck I'm still doing LA despite the rubbish USD rate), but I'm saying its always a factor and you should never simply ignore it.
