Well I thought I didn't like rum until my Jamaican friend introduced me to Appletons V/X Rum.

I'm now on a search to find what I can mix with my new found tipple as I don't drink coke.

My friend told me Apple and lime or pineapple juice.

Any experienced rum drinkers out there? Any suggestions?

any fruit juice is good with rum, especially citrus fruits, coconut milk is a good choice, and to help clear colds, add some crushed very hot chilis and down it in one ;)

Appletons VX is a nice tipple my favourite however is Mount Gay Extra Old followed by Pusser's Red Label.

Personally I like it neat :)

Mixing if not coke most common is to use Peppermint or Pineapple or even water to make grog :)

Rum is the drink of the Gods though :D

The best mixer I found for rum is Dr Pepper - tastes great, adds a bit of a liquorice tinge to it. One of my favourite rums with this combination is probably Alnwick Rum. Orange and pineapple are also quite good. I generally drink it on its tod during the winter.

I visited the Mount Gay rum distillery in Barbados in December. Amazing place. Got a great buffet dinner including rum ice cream with rum cake and a miniature on the side!

Brought back a twin pack of the Eclipse and Silver Eclipse and a bottle of the 30-year-old 1703. First two are amazing with a dash of cola and lime, the latter on its own.

Agreed, my personal favourite is Havana Club Anejo Especial, although I've never seen any of their more expensive varieties for sale to lay my hands on.

It's very smooth and doesn't have any bite at the back of your throat like the cheap stuff does.

Don't spoil rum by mixing it

- i agree completely. Rum is far to nice on it's own to waste by drinking watered down with pish.

i used to think there were MEN on this forum. now, other than Justin, i'm not so sure... ;)

Yup, just bought back a few litres from the Caribbean. VAT19 and El Dorado are both brilliant - on their own or mixed.
