I currently do about 200 miles a week (sometimes a little more) with my daily commute and trip to my girlfriends. I currently have an 08 1.5 swift, which i get about 35mpg, which is ok-ish.

However a friend of mine has recently got a FR and claims that he is getting upwards of 55mpg out of it and it does look mighty fun to drive.

I do enjoy the swift (certainly for chucking round corners), and as anyone whose driven one, they aren't bad for a little runaround.

Question for you guys, is my mate spouting rubbish, and if so - is it worth any kind up change to leon?

Assuming you're talking about the FR TDI Mk2?

A friend with a Golf 140 (so same engine in a lower state of tune) averages just below 50mpg on a fairly long commute, so 55mpg is doable on a long run if driven carefully. Realistically, mid 40s average would be about right if you're being enthusiastic.

You should be getting more than 35mpg from your suzuki if you're being careful

i dunno, isnt the FR sporty and the Swift not? Unless its a swift sport or whatever they are called?

sure the Leon is heavier but with more torque, and probably set up a bit better suspension wise than a normal leon it wont be too bad performance/handling wise?

i wouldnt say i'm being careful with the swift. I'd rather have a little bit of fun with my car rather than drive it like a robot. Car's are meant to driven imo.

Either way, having never owned a diesel and certainly not a turbo'd diesel, am i able to have as much fun in that, but with half the fuel costs?

Most diesels are turboed these days!

You also wont get 70mpg from one, so you're not going to half the fuel cost. At best you're going to save a few quid a week

Nope, 1.5GLX, 1.6 is the sport (although hardly a lot of different 100bhp vs 125bhp). It is rather chuckable and quite fun round country lanes - but the reality of it is that most of my 'fun' nowadays is spent on motorways and sitting in traffic.

I doubt very much that a 2 litre diesel Leon is 'mighty fun to drive'. I would imagine your Swift is more fun to drive.

I would challenge that.

And you won't get close to 70MPG from a Leon FR. I think if you drove like a saint you might make high fourties.

You're better off naming your budget and letting people recommend stuff.

Having a guess, i could get 6k ish for the swift at a push i think. Not bothered about getting a slightly older car - as long as its well looked after.

Wouldnt want to go much over what I'd get for that really
