DCS:- Black Shark only £11 on D2D!

Joystick is a must, as is a photographic memory to remember startup!!! Jeeez

Left Win + Home = Auto startup. :)

I patched using the download from DCS site.. I haevn't tried to play yet, but does this mean I've borked my install (and effectively wasted an activation?)

When you activate the game (i.e. first run after install) it will phone home, but that's it. :)

The Activation doesn't work that way. You can Install and uninstall as many times as you like on that activation, provided your hardware and operating system (i.e. same windows install) are the same.

I like the look of this but don't have a joystick only a mouse and PS3 Pad, will it fly well with this?

There is a Joypad/Arcade Mode but I haven't tried it TBH. If you do decide to get it, I'd suggest getting the cheapest joystick you can find (maybe ebay) too. It will be light years ahead of using a joypad.

I think I'll buy it and play it all weekend.

Is there an inbetween mode ie not arcade and not full simiulation?

Is there a setting like flying in Arma 2 but a couple of notches up on realism?

This may help some of the new flyers a Dummy's Guide to DCS: Black Shark courtesy of Para_Bellum over on SimHQ.

I'd also recommend the Producers notes series of videos as a training aid

Oxy this image shows the difficulty options available. At a guess, "Easy avionics" without Easy flight would be close to what you want. But I can't be sure as I've never given it a try.

Just wow.. 3 hours flight time and I can't even get a missile to launch or rockets/cannon to fire. Got the lock, got the target mode set, laser mode set, etc. etc. as per the tutorial track.. but it. just. won't. launch.

Even followed this vid, and it still just won't launch :/

Make sure the Master Arm is on too, and hold down the trigger for up to 2 seconds.

Note that the rocket/missile/bomb release Trigger is not the same as the Cannon trigger.

Space = Cannon Trigger
Space and Right ALT = Weapon Release.

Nate

Edit:- Have a look at the Dummy's Guide to DCS: Black Shark I posted earlier, it may help you spot what's going on. Also handy is the official FAQ

Hmm, I used to love chopper sims back in the day, its been so long since I've played one though.

What are the chances of playing with just a keyboard and mouse, or is (as I suspect) a proper flightstick required?

Flight Stick im afraid. You don`t need to spend hundreds im using a 25 quid thrustmaster and i does what i need it to do.
Roll on the new compatability patch with flaming cliffs 2.

Darnit Nate!!!

Having been blindsided by Starforce on Wings of Prey I find it increasingly difficult to justify my waning rage against companies who use them for copy protection, purchased and downloading, I feel like such a turncoat :(

Still, Helicopters, woot :D

That guide is great Nate, thanks. It didn't occur to me to trim every time I move the cyclic. I haven't tried it yet, either, but I'm not sure I understand how it would help/work? May be I'll see exactly why when I try again tonight. :)

As you begin to get familiar with the Shark you will most likely find you self fighting the Helo to get it to point and do what you want. For now just 1) Hold the trim 2) manoeuvre to where you want to point the Helo 3) release trim everytime you want to change direction OR Enable the flight Director (my preference)

Key to understanding what is going on is understanding the Trim and Autopilot/Stabilisation systems (pg 2-68 in the manual) This post on the DCS forum explains it better than the manual.

Welcome to the Darkside Dano, I knew I'd get you eventually :)

Right, so to completely summarise.. I want all 3 (alt/bank/pitch) on at all times, and when I need to change speed/alt/heading I need to press and hold trim until the aircraft is in its new desired attitude and velocity?

Is the collective brake only needed when changing altitude then?

You want the Bank,Pitch and Heading Holds on (as per pic above), this leaves you free to change your altitude at will. To manoeuvre you will need to to press and hold trim until the aircraft is in its new desired attitude and heading. The autopilot then tries to maintain the Bank,Pitch and Heading when the Trim was released.

The Collective Brake sets the Desired Altitude if you have the Alt Hold on too. Trim does not affect the desired Altitude Hold height.

Enabling the Flight Director will Disengage the autopilot from the Bank,Pitch and Heading channels, but importantly leave the Stabilisation/Damping on. I.e. The Shark will now not attempt to hold a particular Bank,Pitch or Heading as you move the stick.

Right.. getting the hang of flying around now. Need to learn to use the ABRIS better though, just failed a mission because I spent too long trying to get it to advance waypoints (I don't mean just selecting the number on the pad, I mean it point me to it on the map :))

The ABRIS (The mapscreen) and the Keypad Navigation device (PVI-800) actually don't talk to each other, even though they do much the same thing. The PVI controls the Autopilot and is an inertial navigation system.

The ABRIS is a GPS system that was added later to the Aircraft and it does a million things I still haven't got my head around even now. It is really a mini computer (I think it even has boot up screen showing a 486DX cpu) but it isn't integrated into the Sharks other systems.

Nate

Apart from the Datalink ;)

The ABRIS and all the systems in the shark are actually pretty simplistic really, just make sure you read through ABRIS chapter of the manual and all will become clear. Wait until the Hog comes along if you want complex avionics :D
