Caravans are cool...

Of course caravans only cost a few quid...

As well as having to compromise your main car into a house-pulling slug.

Caravans are cool...........when they are on fire.

They also look "cool" after you've spent 4 hours stuck in summer traffic on the motorway only to find a pile of fibreglass on the central reservation with a Freelander towing an A-frame on it's side further up the road. (I have experienced this).

They spoil so many good Scottish driving roads during the summer, there you are enjoying the views and making a decent progress and round the next corner you find youself stuck behind a 45-car queue with a Rover 25 up front pulling the latest "Elddis" Special and they never pull over. Damm things are the work of the devil and the cause of many accidents/injuries or worse.

Caravanners- whats wrong with you????

Caravans are insane, the second hand value is a pittance, if you buy one new and use it just for holidays, 5 star hotels are a much better deal.

They have to have cool names in order to divert attention from the utter drudgery that is the average Caravan owner's life.

and this is why i like the internet :p
Peoples misguided views, still its a free world and every one can have an opinion.
I would love to stop in 5 star hotels, but with 2 kids the prices would be a nightmare and to have all the snobby(no offence to poster about staying in 5 star hotels) guests looking at you as your kids enjoy themselves. No thanks. Give me a campsite with lots of open space for the kids to be kids and enjoy them selves. Did no one in the motors forum ever have a childhood? ;)

As for 2nd hand prices being so bad, in '08 motorhome registrations were up 45%, you could have bought a new caravan in 08, used it for a season and got what you paid for it if you had sold it.
Granted old vans can be a 2nd hand nightmare, same with cars, pays your money and takes your chance.

looking at peoples views on caravans and their owners posting a new thread about find me a tow car that pull a van weighing 1499kg, where by that weight is less than 85% the kerb weight of the tow car and the car cant be a Beemer or a Ford, must be diesel and less than £7k would be a wasted effort, oh and it needs to do a decent mpg solo ;)

I loved caravaning with my parents as a kid. I'd much rather go away in it than stay in a hotel. Good times :)

Can you even buy new caravans?!

A couple of mates of mine raced in a motocross series, one of them bought a caravan for sub £1k and absolutely hammered it, up and down the country behind his van every week or every other week for the fairly long MX season, it held up just fine. I think the other one he bought just fell to bits but it cost him about 50p. Once he stumped up for the better one he was rolling.

Sure they can be a pain in the arse but as Shoei said those ones tend to be the old duffers and they can be a pain in the arse even when they're not towing a six berth caravan.

You can paya few hundred for a really good quality big tent :/

I couldn't tow a caravan across the country, I simply couldn't put up with the amount of hate that would be directed toward me, and knowing that I was contributing far more than my fair share to road congestion and the frustration of other motorists. Clearly plenty just don't give a toss about other people, so maybe I'm just a considerate old softy.

The comparison with 5* hotels is also rather silly. Compare it to a chalet in Center Parcs or Butlins maybe, but unless you are a millionaire you won't have a caravan that is anything like a 5* hotel.

The "hate" thing doesnt bother me(i have other things more important to worry about than that).
seeing how i mainly tow on motorways, the congestion bit is irrelevant and with the amount of other stuff on roads plus scamera's everywhere, road speeds are getting slower. Plus i'll pull in where possible to let cars past or wave em past on straights. Its the old duffers who cause the big problems.

Coming back from Oxford last year on the M6 north of stafford, i made better progress in the inside lane than all the numptys in the middle lane and the "beemer" lane. They were stop-start-stop-start, and it was like that up to junction 20!!

Thats probably a better comparision as well. For sheer luxury on the move your looking at an american RV and they start from £125,000 for decent one.
Airstream are around £45,000 for a 4 birth caravan then you need a range rover/Dodge Ram to tow it.

Oh and 5* hotel in the lakes in summer, 7 nights, 2 Adults + 2 kids, £1788 inc breakfast.
