I'm expecting a call from the person I'm purchasing a house from. The solictors secretary called me to get permission to pass on my mobile, this isn't a problem obviously. However she seller mentioned the heating system.

I'm jumping the gun a bit here but I'm assuming that the boiler has packed in, we knew this was an old boiler and that when replaced it'd have to be moved (currently in a bedroom cupboard). I'm guessing she's going to try to get me to up my price for the house or pay her a percentage for this boiler after completion.

Your thoughts?

We haven't completed and our surveyor is still chasing planning permissions for one item of the house. She has accepted our offer subject to our finance and surveyor being happy. I don't really see why I should pay anything towards this by means of increasing my offer or after completion. It's not my house and the purchase is subject to things being functional and safe. I'm not heartless, I can see why it'd be a kick in the teeth whilst selling a house but I personally wouldn't expect someone buying my house to chip in. If she'd had the planning permission etc for the alterations sorted at the start we'd be living there already.

Scotland incidentally - know that changes a few things regarding houses. It seems like an odd situation, going to chat with my solicitor on Monday if this turns out to be the case when the seller calls me.

If I was in your shoes, ie someone I was buying a house from asked me to pay anything towards the cost of replacing something that had broken, my answer would be no. Say it had gone a a couple of weeks after you'd moved in, what do you think their answer to you would be if you asked them for cash for maintenance?

If your going to move in any time soon get some money off the house, and tell them you'll sort it out when you move in.

If its still at the beginning stages (as it sounds), then its not really your problem.

What's almost exactly what I said to my wife about a hour ago, if after 2 months the boiler goes I have no doubt they'd tell me where to go if I went cap in hand. This is the same situation really, but in reverse. I haven't bought the house yet, partly as they've been dragging their feet.

What a cheek?

Imagine for a second it's a car for sale. You agree to sell your car for £5000. Between you agreeing to sell the car, and you carrying out the transaction / paperwork, the head gasket goes, requiring £500 of repair work. Do you a) fix the head gasket before the transaction b) offer £500 off the sale price so the buyer can fix in their own time, or c) ask the buyer for another £500 on top of the sale price so you can fix the car with their money, leaving you to drive around in your car until the transaction takes place
