Am i basically cheating when i do this, i try to stop myself but i just can't resist it sometimes:

If you press Q we all know it'll highlight whatever enemy you're looking at, here's the thing though, you don't actually have to be able to SEE them for it to lock on. As long as there's no solid material (terrain, building wall, etc) between you and them it will highlight them, this includes smoke and undergrowth. When i KNOW someone is hidden amongst it i just point in that general direction, pan across the landscape and mash Q, this has a good chance of 'spotting' them. Using that i can then get a pretty good idea of where to shoot and will usually kill them even though they can't see me and all i can see of them is a red triangle (that would normally be above their head).

I know it's part of the game mechanic, but it feels lame so i'm hesitant to use it often. Do other people? Will i get banned from servers for doing it? I'm not using any scripts or anything like that, just panning across and mashing Q.

Streeteh, that's exactly what I do, and when someone is spotted behing a tree I just spam some bursts in that direction. If I get the crosshair I know I've hit them so they're not behind a rock, so I keep spamming. If I lose the spot I mash Q some more :) really lame, but it works

Q never seems to do anytthing for me?

Q does EVERYTHING :p

No seriously, Q is the magic teamplay button. If someone's low on health and you have a medpack, point at them and press Q and it'll alert them that you're trying to heal them. Low on health yourself? Point at a nearby medic and press Q, it'll ask for health. Want a ride from a passing tank? Point and Q. Its most useful application is highlighting an enemy for the team, if there's a firefight you're about to get into that you don't think you'll win, highlight the enemies for your team before you go in, you never know, someone might end up saving your ass from afar.

It's literally a universal comms button.

Sometimes when im scoped in on an enemy sniper and i cant spot him with Q i un scope and all the bushes around him disappear if at very long range. Then mash Q and hes spotted :p

I use it a fair bit, never seems to do anything - is it one of those annoying buttons that tells others but never gives you any feedback?

Nah you'll hear it and you'll see a red icon appear over enemies heads or see an icon appear over an ally to make it clear you've requested/offered aid to that person.

You need to make sure you're actually aiming at them though, the crosshair needs to be right on target.

Does it work with ammo boxes?

It works with practically everything..

Engineer can Q a vehicle to tell the occupant he'll fix it
Anyone can Q a vehicle to tell them to wait/pick you up
You can Q MCOM/Flag points to order attack/defend
You can Q a medic to ask for health
Medic can Q you to tell you to wait for health
You can Q an Assault to ask for ammo (though face-knife works best)
Assault can Q you to tell you to wait for ammo
You can Q AT-mines and C4 to warn team members
You Q an enemy vehicle to spot it for your team
You Q an enemy infantry to spot them for your team

Bear in mind that the Q button has an anti-spam function - spam it too often, and it'll disable itself for a short while (seems to be ~10 seconds ish).

You can easily rack up half your points by pressing Q :)

One problem with using Q to ask for ammo/health/a ride etc.. is that if you play on the Russian side, the voice is in Russian, and people often ignore you. A symbol still appears on the map to tell the person you were communicating with what you wanted, but if they don't look at the map, then they just ignore you most of the time until you take a drill to their head or similar.

Also I thought smoke prevented Q-spotting, I'm a regular spot spammer, but haven't got it to work through smoke. Maybe just unlucky though.

Depends on the type of smoke, if it's smoke from large weapon impacts then you can spot through it, if it's from a smoke grenade/vehicle countermeasure then you can't spot through it.

Do you get points if someone acts successfully on a Qspot? Or just points for hitting Q?

Depends on the type of Qspot and the outcome. If you spot a vehicle and someone takes it out you sometimes get 10 bonus points for spotting, i've never had any bonus points for infantry spotting.

If you use Q to command your squad to attack/defend a point, capture that point or make a kill while defending it you get bonus points.

Q for ammo and repairs doesn't seem to give you anything in terms of points. It's worth noting however that you will inevitably gain something from that exchange be it much needed health/ammo or points for doling it out so it makes sense you don't get points for doing it in this case.

UV, only in normal mode. I'd like to see how Q works in hardcore...

I don't play HC :)
You still get points for Q-assists in HC, there's just no visual indicators.

You gets points if someone acts on a Q-spot - MCOM/FLAG attack/defends and vehicle/infantry kills will net you points. At 30 points for a Q-assist, it's not to be laughed at.. Q a bunch of 3 enemies that your team-mate then takes out with a grenade, and you just got 90 points!
