Hi

Currently my parents PC is running an Abit NF7 Motherboard (not s or v2), XP 1800+ cpu and a 64mb Radeon Card..... It's not doing too well and generally needs looking at monthly. They have been using it for something like 6 or 7 years and i think its coming to the end of its life.

Ive dug around the house and managed to find some bits, new bits that i bought ages ago and seemingly never used, these bits are:

ASRock K8 Upgrade VM800
AMD Athlon 64 SKT 754, 3400+ Newcastle Core
Radeon 9700 Pro

Is this going to be worthy on the upgrade for them? They use it for Internet, Email and downloading pictures from their camera and thats it!

Seeing as this upgrade will cost no pounds and i want to spend no pounds this seems worthwhile in that instance anyway...

Also this Motherboard is a mATX which would be nice if i could find a neat little mATX case to replace the HUGE Chieftec Scorpio tower i put their PC in ages ago :)

Any suggestions on a nice cheap and i mean cheap mATX case?

Out of those two cases the coolermaster looks the nicest, currently looking on the bay for anything but they dont look half as good as that coolermaster one! £25 delivered is tempting :)

I did actually remember the ram, i thought i had 2 sticks of DDR ram here but i dont, will need to check MM or eBay for some of that, only supports 2gb max so it wont be that expensive....

One more thing though, a cooler :( Dammit, can you get those things for S754 now? Quiet would be nice as well!

Yes any 939 ans some AM2/3 coolers work too, the freezer 64 certainly fits

Interesting, im sure i have a Zalman cooler laying around somewhere, from maybe the 8000 or 9000 range. If i can find that and it supports the socket it should work.

Nothing better than making another PC from some spare parts you had laying around:)

I'm in the process of doing just that but my GF is questioning why i need two computers. Truth is I don't need two really but i don't think she would understand if I told her i was doing it just for fun hehe

Yeah, ive been having a massive tidy up and i am amazed at the amount of hardware, new as well that i am finding!

I dont remember buying half of it :(

If you get a fresh Windows install on at the same time then I'd say it would be a very nice upgrade.
Still nothing wrong with the old 754 chips for light usage. :)

i had 7 running quite sweetly on a 754 sempron 2600+ (at 2.2ghz). nowt wrong with them. for the cheapest of the cheap at the time, that chip was one hell of a workhorse for 5 years.

Ive looked on the ASRock website and it doesnt list that it will support Win7, but im sure most of the drivers will be in Win7 and the ones that arent, if im lucky i will be able to find on the chipset manufacturers website.

Bought one of the coolermasters, so that should arrive monday. I need to then get some Ram and a cooler (going to a computer fair at weekend so hope to find some cheap stuff there) and then i can get it built.

Just have to find a way to tidy up the cables on the PSU, its an old one but has tons of wires! :(
