anyone done a working holiday/travelled in New Zealand?

One thing you MUST know.

If you want to travel about, you will either have to get buses, or buy a car. You can get a cheap car out there then sell it afterwards. Loads of people do this and it really is the only way to do it if you want independence.

I visited pretty much everywhere and went on a Stray bus - http://www.straytravel.com/

Just stayed in the backpacking accommodation which was cheap at the time, about a tenner a night and always clean.

Just make some time for the best little town in he world, Queenstown.

thanks will have a look when I'm on the computer later just on my phone ATM. Something I really hadn't considered to he honest i kist presumed there would be buses running all over the place and trains :o

When you head out to the sticks you meet some right rednecks. Seriously, the place a big and mostly very barren outside of Auckland. If I went back I would go by car without fail.

Just don't settle in Auckland whatever you do. You don't want to become a JAFA. (check it on Wiki) :D

I tell you what, all this talkj of NZ hads really got me thinking again.

My contract ends in September I might just have to bugger off over there for a couple of months.

This been in Australia and I personally know of 5-7 people who have been over there and not fuond any work at all. These are the sort of people who did go out looking for work and literally found nothing. As people I just know from the job/casual mates I think I must know of another 15 people who never got work out there. NOt sure who hard they tried mind:p

Your final sentance is the key point in this statement. When I was in Oz I met loads of people that moaned about not having work that didn't put any effort in. I then met two Estonian girls that spent two days handing out CVs to every pub and restaurant in Melbourne. They got work within a week.

Personally I found work through a fellow Hearts fan that I met in the pub.

So true hostels are full of people moanng about no work. My trick was google maps and hightlight all the pubs and hotels and then work out a route and hand my CV out to everyone of them.

In Darwin I had a choice of 5 jobs ;) Took the one paying 30 AUD an hour not bad for bar work

Emigrated to NZ almost a year ago and we absolutely love it here, best decision we ever made.

On a less positive note, there are fewer jobs at the moment, a lot of kiwis have returned home so jobs that previously had no kiwi applicants (fruit picking, etc) now do. The employment law here means that an employer has to prove there was no kiwi available/suitable before they are allowed to offer the job to anyone else. This is less of an issue for temporary work but it's worth being aware of.

In terms of finding work, www.seek.co.nz and www.trademe.co.nz/jobs are good places to start but if you have any contacts in NZ already then make sure to tap them up as well.
