The Official Splinter Cell Conviction thread

Really wanted this until I watched the GameSpot video review. Looks like they've spent all of their time dumbing it down and removing all of the characteristics that made the previous games in the series so good. Seems they've favoured action over stealth :(

Really wasn't feeling this game at all last night. Surprissed no-one seems that bothered by the frame rate! At times on the first co-op campaign level it was dropping to unplayable levels.

Me and my co-op buddy basically hated the way the screen goes black when you enter shadows. Night vision was about 100 times better than this idea. I'm tempted to try and take it back but might give it more of a chance over the weekend.

I know what you mean, ROB75 played quite a bit last night and for the most part the frame rate was rock solid until we alerted about 10 people, trying to shoot enemies at 4fps was not fun. We both died in the end but did the section again properly and hardly alerted anyone.

Yeah i agree, but you can still do every level without firing a shot (you would have to be pretty good mind).

I would have preferred more of a stealthy basis but the mix of action/stealth appeals for me.

I have been reading the reviews and I don't like what I am hearing. I want to play a Splinter Cell game, well because it is a Splinter Cell game and not a action shooter. This was last stealth series left and now ............ nothing :(

Yeah i know. There are a few classic splinter cell elements missing which is annoying. Im surprised how quiet this thread is after the release. I would have thought the number of posts would have risen significantly.

Cracking games tonight again ROB, was so funny when you pulled the guys off the balcony and each one landed on me. lol. Well up for some more tomorrow. Just a bit pooped at the moment.

I think its been obvious for about 3 years this was a action game with stealth elements. Its about as complex as Batman.

I realy like it anyway

Its as stealthy as you want it to be, there only around 3 moments where you actually have to kill, rest you can just sneak past.Difference now is you can take everyone out too, but it still requires picking your spots to kill.So this time its actually more varied. You only have yourself to blame if you go in guns blazing then start complaining.

Well I have played all the other SC games and I am actually pretty impressed at how this one has refreshed the franchise. I loved the stealth element of the other games but you never had a fail-safe get-out if bad crap all came at you at once. In Conviction you have a few less of the older SC elements, but also a bunch of new elements to help you out of tough situations, provided you've planned for them. To be honest, the game is as stealthy as you want it to be. It is very easy to say it is centred around a lot of action, but you can never just rush into a situation and then get out of it. You still have to plan things. Assess enemy patrol routes, plan for takedowns in the shadows, mark targets if you wish to use your execute ability. The game gives you a lot of tools but you don't have to use all of them.

Me and my best mate have been playing the co-op campaign and to be frank, we have found it to be pure awesomeness. The change of style (a fully dedicated co-op story as a prequel to the main story) is just what the SC franchise needs, and I hope that we get to see more of Archer & Kestrel. Having said that, the single player story is shaping up to be fantastic so far.

And for multiplayer there are a whole bunch of new modes, along with the ability to unlock weapons for both single story and co-op story. These weapons are available to both modes so unlock an MP5 in co-op and you can use it the first time Sam finds a weapons cache. Any unlocks that you buy for weapons are also available.

Ubisoft saw that their original idea for Sam was going nowhere and they opted to do what many developers wouldn't bother doing: they scrapped it and went straight back to the drawing board. Kudos to them for admitting their mistake and making it right rather than releasing some half-arsed effort. I hated the original concept for Conviction.

After playing the demo I was sure that I'd love the full game and so far I haven't been disappointed. I'd urge everyone else to play the demo first before committing. If you don't like the demo, you won't get on with the full game.

Oh I forgot to answer a question above. Both the single player and co-op campaigns are saved independantly from one another, but your PEC (Personal Elite Creation, something other Tom Clancy games uses) achievements and unlocks carry over between both modes. Progress in co-op is also tracked between the co-op players. For example, if you host and play 2 missions together, the next time you co-op partner decides to host, he / she will be able to select missions up to the point that he / she got to when someone else was the host. a lot of co-op capable games won't let you do this, although their co-op is based off the single player whereas this is a totally dedicated campaign.

Ah that's good to know, thanks CHokKA. Do you have any experience with Deniable ops ? I mean what is it ? I have tried it twice and both times i was on my own, am i missing something or is this the way it is ?

Deniable ops is for two players and it has a few different game modes where you have set tasks to achieve. I haven't played it yet, but that is how the vids portray it. You have to go through a level clearing out all the enemies whilst achieving certain goals. One mode fails you if you are detected. I'd try it with two peeps.

Like what you said CHokKA and I agree, with the exception of the above - I purposely played stealthy in the SP on Realistic as I wanted it to be more of a challenge and tried not to get spotted - but come the Co-Op my partner was not quite as patient, and we literally played it like a 3rd person shooter (again on Realistic) and just ran into rooms killing folk - the cover ability and lack of decent AI made it pretty easy, if you do get spotted just run away and the fire at an empty space, shoot them from somewhere else - rinse and repeat... in fact the last scene of the Co-Op campaign almost requires this because the AI continuously respawns until you complete a certain objective.

Overall I enjoyed the mix up and the Co-Op was fun, just starting the deniable ops and will endeavour to get the full 1K on this game (coincidentally this game has broke the 100,000 GS for me - about time, been 98+ for about a year!).

Gets a recommendation for me - but I would say its more of a rental over 1 or 2 weeks to fully rinse - re playability is limited once you've done everything IMO.

Oh right I see. Well I selected it and chose my kit etc. the game loaded but i was the only one in the game. I suppose it only works with someone in your party ?

If you get any success let me know my good man.

It's both Solo/Dual if you want it to be :)

Hunter = wipe out 10 enemies (might be less depending on difficulty, I played it on Realistic) - if you get spotted in a zone you get 20 enemies, normally 4-6 zones per level (taken from the Co-Op story).

Last Man Standing = taking out waves of enemies while defending a location (not tried myself yet).

Think there is a Face Off mode too but again not tried this yet.

I have only done coop so far with ROB75. the other game modes sound great. Hunter sounds like a great idea too although I don't think I could cope with 60 enemies as im that bad :D

It is done in zones - so you get a weapons cache between each (normally, there are a few in a row) - but it'll be a small zone of the map with 10 in, when complete it unlocks the new zone for another 10.

Really enjoying the game so far, still on SP atm, on mission 10 in the theatre. Playing on Realistic for my first play through.

ags

I'm looking for someone to play Co-Op with I've just done the game on realistic gotta say I'm nothing special with all the stealth business.
