Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

Just been speaking to my mum, she is going on holiday in a few weeks and is saying that there's some Easyjet passanger flight's to and from the UK right now, she's "seen it on the news"

I can't convince her she must be mistaken

is there a website I can point her to that will convince her?

The airlines will have a similar problem to the banks did - its all about liquidity.

The main costs to the airlines (staff wages etc) still need to be paid every day. Yes they can save some small costs (fuel, maintenance) but they are also having to arrange either alternative transport, hotel costs, refunds, food water etc for all of their customers.

Generally they will have a healthy cashflow in and out daily. At the moment the majority of their daily cashflow is outwards with very little inflow. Very few companies have £bn or even high £ms sitting in instant access accounts.

Due to the ongoing closeure of air space in large parts of Europe, easyJet flights to / from Northern Europe, including the United Kingdom will be cancelled today. A limited number of flights will continue to operate in Southern Europe, and passengers who are booked to travel with easyJet this weekend are advised to visit easyJet.com before travelling to the airport

She thinks this means flights from the UK to Southern Europe are still operating

It's coming into land, it was up at about 19-20,000 feet not so long ago.

Is there any difference between the ash and a sandstorm? We can fly in sandstorms just fine.

Ash is rock, glass, a lot denser. If it gets into an engine it melts and forms a layer over whatever is inside the engine.

Isn't that the one which has been plonking around a bit all morning, generally not going about 4000 ft?

ash is finer and sticks to the insides of the engine, and builds up forming rocks in the combustion chambers. Sand just blasts right through.

The team will ask for donations from those using the boats, with profits going to the Help for Heroes charity.

Yeorite, just you leave this money with us on this boat that will be going back and forth....

The Police helicopter just went overhead for the first time this weekend. It's usually backwards and forwards all day and night.
