Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

Stupid volcano. I have to arrange train tickets and faff about in order to go to Bristol - and add another four hours to my trip :(

Well instead of flying Bristol to Glasgow today I've got to spend 6-8hrs on the train :p

On a serious note, does this really need top level meetings by COBRA/Gordon to get the country flying again? Surely passenger safety is of the utmost importance here.

And all this talk of the Navy bringing peple home? Erm, wtf?

You are a fool if you think they will go against advice and risk against the advice given to them.

I'm certainly no fool and I said I "hope" the authorities do not put passenger safety at risk. Which is not saying that they will but in the currently climate anything is possible.

i do feel deeply glad for people that live near an airport, i bet the piece and quiet has been good

It's strange on the airport tbh. You can hear things like the bearings on antennas as they rotate where previously you couldn't hear anything at all.

The shops are deserted, most are closed. It feels like 'I am Legend' walking around the terminal buildings :D

On the plus side M&S had to sell off loads of stock on the cheap thats nearing it's sell by date :D

Ozone? What does that have to do with air traffic?

Well during the last mass grounding of fligts (sept 11), the difference between night and day temps was a whole degree celsius more globally. I also remember watching a horizon program where scientists actually found that the days were brighter too as contrails from the aircraft weren't blocking sunlight any more.

becasue they leave a lot of unburnt fuel and a lot of co2 high in the atmosphere. this reflects heat they burn a lot of fuel obviously,

also the condensation trails affect the atomosphere and as said the light we see

picture of contrails!

The government need to create contingency plans as this will start to have consequences for the ecomony if it goes on too long. They also have a duty to facilitate UK citizens being brought back to the UK. This isnt just about getting the planes up again.

Regardless no one is going to authorise opening up the air space without 100% confidence and scientific evidence to back them up as it would be law suit city if a plane crashed.

Several airlines have sent up test flights, then inspected the engines and found no problems.

The Met office have gone up and found dangerous levels of ash though.

Dangerous as defined by what / whome though? Certainly not the engineers inspecting the engines that have flown through it.

The only etst flights i've seen are all incredibly short distance.. IE Heathrow to Cardiff. Thats not long enough to say everything its perfectly fine. the Aircraft wouldn't even get to a suitable height.

Not to mention the engineers of the airlines will always say its fine, they need to get paid, thats not going to happen if the airlines are losing millions per day.

plus the fact, why risk it? can you imagin if everything was given to go ahead, regardles sof how dangerous. Then a plane crashed because of it. there would be trouble! "shouldn't of even been in the air etc"

Why can we not use ships to take people to/from Spain/Morocco/etc and then fly them out globally from there?

It really shows that you genuinely know **** all.

Few mates have been stuck in Dubai/Cyprus coming back from Afghan.

Pretty unlucky really, but hey at least they get a few more days sunshine! :p

"

That's got to be the dumbest thing said in this thread. If there was a visible problem with the engines, the engineers would definitely not say it's fine, they'd get the sack.

Just read on other forums that:

1 - we are at war with an unamed nation and the volcano is a cover story to protect British air space.

2 - the volcano is a cover story to hide a mass miltary operation related to some new world order super government.

Also the cloud is supposed to hit America at 6pm today which presumably will add Iceland to the axis of evil?
