Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

No, I'm not being ridiculous. Your number may be right - but they don't refute my point. Tourism is a net drain on the UK economy. More money is spent by British people abroad (an import) than foreign people spend here (an export). The UK economy would be in better shape with less tourism overall.

The UK tourism balance of payments showed a deficit of £20 billion in 2008-09. Spain had a surplus of £24bn, France a surplus of £8.6bn and the US a surplus of £17.9bn.

Tell the over 1 million people employed in the tourism industry that ;) You simply cannot benefits the way you are trying to, so yes, you are being ridiculous..

But anyway, back on topic....

where on earth are we going to put a load of spanish holiday makers with their luggage on a warship? next will we be serving them sangria and olives off the gun turrets.

talk about losing all common sense.

Those million people and more would be employed in the UK if we brits stopping spending our money in Spain, France, US etc and instead spend it at home. The UK economy would grow.

Incorrect kind sir!

Really, so the fact the flight when out over the Atlantic for 550 miles and up to an altitude of nigh on 30,000 feet means it wouldnt even get to a suitable height ??

Also what sort of qualifications or experience does an IT technician have that makes you qualified to know what an aeronautical engineer deems what makes a plane fit to fly?

edit: Apologies I see that you have already posted #945 and this post was being written at the same time and therefore was not meant to labour the point. :)

No, they will be served rum and towed in the lifeboats. :p;):D

Er... the deck? It's like a 1hr trip!

Its more like 10-12 hours i think.

Have any of you ever been on a war ship? Apart from being on your bed....or at work there is NOWHERE to go other than on deck...which is quite small....and full of things to shoot planes/boats...hmmm

You've clearly never been on ship :p

No, it wouldn't grow.

If people lost the ability to go abroad on holiday, it doesn't correlate that they'd spend the same amount holidaying in the UK.

We'd lose £120B a year from incoming tourists, but we wouldn't gain £120B via internal tourism.

Indeed, since people go to Europe for the sun or for the skiing, and we don't have either of those in sufficient quantities in this country

IMO theres more risk using these warships than there is just flying them home.

a) spain to uk on an unsheltered boat deck is a hell of a long time for a normal adult, so imagine children/elderly/disabled.
b) these ships were not designed for general public use and are dangerous - not forgetting the risk of people falling overboard
c) sanition
d) what if it sinks - will there be enough life jackets
e) insurance who will pay if someone falls and breaks their legs or loses their luggage
