Digital Economy Bill passed through the Lords

I don't use any form of P2P, so the disconnection element of this doesn't / won't affect me. I do however have a big problem knowing that I'm not free to browse 'our' Internet freely anymore. Oh, hello China.

Unless you are very careful on your choice of ISPs you are already in such a position. The vast majority of ISPs use a black list from IWF to filter their internet content.

I used to download like crazy when I was younger. Now I don't pirate at all. The only thing my utorrent client downloads is Linux *.isos for my test machine. This bill still irks me though. Especially with how quickly it has been forced through. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of politicians and lords who have received some nice gifts from complete strangers who are in no-way tied to global media businesses whatsoever.

It reminds me of the dangerous dogs act which ultimately only ended up punishing legitimate and decent dog owners. Has the DDA stopped people being mauled by banned dogs? No. Will the DEB stop people downloading and sharing files illegally? No.

I'd also like to add Pete Wishart is an absolute tool and when he was spewing his nonsense out in the house of commons the other day I had to turn the stream off before I fired my monitor out the window in anger.

I can't imagine they will be able to implement clause 8 banning access to certain sites, I think it will be challenged in the courts if it ever comes up as I suspect it's in breach of Article 10 freedom of speech and potentially if it blocks something like Wikileaks in breach of the Freedom of Information Act.

From a piracy point of view, I can understand why they are doing this, but it is very frustrating. I download the vast majority of music through iTunes now, buy all my games, pay for movies etc. The only thing I continue to download illegally is tv shows, and this is only because British tv channels are so slow to get the latest series. For me to stop downloading tv shows they need to be shown on UK tv as soon after the US as possible, it's not good enough that we have to wait several months or more for the latest series. The worst example is Scrubs: e4 are just about to show series 8 of that, yet in the US they have pretty much finished showing series 9. That's not good enough.

'another way' surely is completely open ended and can mean termination of service?

So it is possible that without trial or due diligence you could have your internet removed. Does that seem good? Sorry not for me my communist comrades.

EDIT: oops I see you spotted it :)

So when all is said and done, you can effectively be 'cut off' yeh?

>>Call to action<<

Guys, we all use the internet and we all know how important it is that we fight against this bill as it restricts freedom on so many levels and it's an outrage that it's been rushed through parliament.

This takes 30 seconds - PLEASE vote here to get the question through on the next debate:

I can't imagine how the logistics of this 'filtering' will even work. A court rules that access to the Pirate Bay will be restricted in the UK, how is this done? Do they block a range of IPs? At what level of network access is it blocked? How will it be managed and maintained?
One assumes ISPs will be required, by order of the Secretary of State, to deny DNS & browsing requests to the Piratebay.

Thanks guys, now up to 3rd on the list of questions, KEEP it coming :D 200 votes from on here would beat the climate issue, we ALL know how much more important the internet is than the climate!

About bloomin time too.

Pastor Martin Niemöller said:
"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

If you're such a fan of blocking websites why don't you move to China?

yea lets hope they take away the right of freedom and the right to vote and the right to freespeach soon.

oh wait only one of them truly remains

If you're such a fan of blocking websites why don't you move to China?

I don't want to live in China it's government is pretty nasty, I don't speak the lingo and the food would get me down.

I'm not a fan of blocking websites in general but those that server no earthly purpose other than to spread links to bandwidth sapping copyright breaching torrents I won't miss.

What about websites that serve no purpose to spread anger and hatred? What about websites that just spread links or actual pornography. What about websites that spread rumours? What about websites of religions you are not part of? What about YouTube and Vimeo et al that just spread bandwidth (and often copyrighted) material?

Where do you stop?

Education and making media fairly and cheaply available solves the problem of copyright infringement. This part of the Digital Economy Bill has nothing to do with "piracy" and everything to do with having the power to block websites that don't tow the Governments party line...

This is your interpretation and a pretty sensationalist one at that.

So the section in the Act that allows the Government to blocks sites is not in the bill? it is and they can.

In other news the Liberal Democrats have promised to repeal the law should they get into power. Two problems with that. One: They need to get into power. Two: Like all other parties election promises it is just fairy dust and will never happen even if they did get into power.
