The Stoke-On-Trent Thread

Can't believe how much negativity there is in here, I've lived in Stoke and other places in the UK including a spa town and I really don't think it's that bad. There are good parts and bad parts like any place in the UK.

It's dead easy to slate Stoke, one opinion I heard once is the sound of how you'd pronounce the name. A bit like a swear word concentrates on a vowel, I heard that was one of the reasons Stoke gets a raw deal.

Anyway I've seen the Council's plans (mainly for Hanley the City Centre), they have a 3D model of how it's going to look eventually and it looks very good indeed. You're right though they seem to be typical of council stuck in red tape and bureaucracy. E.g. I asked about the regeneration of Stoke town centre and they said they first needed to form a board of about 11 people, then get an office premisis in the town itsself (!?) away from the Civic Centre, and a whole load of other admin that seemed completely over the top to me before they then sat down to talk about the plans.

Born in Nigeria to stokies. Came to Stoke as new born with frequent visits to Nigeria. Lived in nine houses in the fenton Blurton area. Basically lived in Stoke for 52years and I love it.
Not easy typing on an iPod.

Sneyd Green here!

Used to live in hanley but moved here with parents about 12 years ago.

Stoke-on-Trent isn't THAT bad. Its scummy areas are no worse than parts of other cities.

I quite like the area and I'll proabably spend most of my life here, moving towards the greener areas around here towards Staffordshire Moorlands.

I drove through Stoke once. It was 'up north'* and all. Never again.

I also went to Hull. It was worse. I think they mis-spelled it really; Hell!

* For me, 'up north' is anything above the M4.

Just out of intrest when you say stoke do you mean the city center hanley or the town called stoke? Either way there both crap but stoke town is probably one of the worst towns in the world!

I call the entire area Stoke, as to me (I live in Uttoxeter) it is one gigantic craphole. At uni I say I leave near Alton Towers, not Stoke.

I worked with many Stokies whilst at Towers when I was 16 and they are were common, lazy, chainsmokers.

I am sure there are some nice places in the Stoke area, but due to my experiences with the scum of the town, I am afraid my view of the town will always be that Stoke is an unemployed, uneducated town.

At one point Stoke was the cheapest place to buy a house (circa 2004 iirc), well there is good reason for this!!1111one

you can't talk mglover, Uttoxeter has the most small town minded knuckle dragging thugs I've ever come across per square mile. It's the only place i've been started on for simply standing doing nothing.

The other side of Uttoxeter to me has a few rough folk, but the chavs in Uttoxeter aren't a patch on Stoke-On-Trent.

Did you know what 1 in 5 people in Stoke have ZERO qualifications (was on bbc new in Feb-March), do they not realise school is free:p?

I was born in Stoke,

lived in hanley, smallthorne, stanfields, burslem, bentilee, and blurton lol all the good places eh?!?!
and as of two days ago am now a resident of Stone :D bliss

i dont think stoke is that bad and have lived in some prety rough areas and never had any problems same with anywhere really some good folk some bad. its not the council's fault the place is populated by *********. and dont think any amount of money plughed in will make any sort of difference

its not like there all oatcake munching stella drinking stoke/vale fans :S

Grew up in Bentilee up Tiverton rd, moved to Hanley on St Johns st and left as soon as was able to join the RAF. While I can understand some liking Stoke I never did and once the Old Vicky ground went there was nowt left there for me. However, I've been to lots worse places since (wolves!) :D

I've never been to Stoke but would like to visit more places in the UK. Somewhere picturesque with a juxtaposition of urban and provincial living, a melting pot of cultures with good food, night life and hospitable locals. I'd like to give Stoke a shot, so which areas and time of year would you guys recommend?

Summertime, you could watch a gig at the Regent Theatre or Victoria Hall, then get a nice meal in the Cultural Quarter in the City Centre.

Has anyone had the delight of going to ST1? Went a couple of times in my early uni days (cheap drinks) - only one I have been too :(:o

On a less, manky strip club theme, has anyone tried a hot sandwich from 'Plants' near Sainsburys (Newcastle). They make some mean sandwiches!
