Killer nic xeon pro

It's great that you're happy with the card - but I don't see how it can improve your ping by 15ms. Surely it can only improve the ping between the PC and the router. As soon as the packets leave your router and start travelling across the internet, surely they're beyond anything the NIC can influence!

It can't - they are proven to slightly free up some CPU resources - which can translate to 5-10% higher fps while playing online but as even fairly rubbish integrated NICs still manage 0.2-0.3ms pings to your internet gateway/router, theres literally nothing it can reduce... no NIC however clever can reduce the latency between the last point of CPE and your ISP's hardware.

i dont know much about networking as you can tell doesnt the nic speed up the process of sending and reciving data? or is that what basically ping is?

The nic improves the performance of the link between you and the router in your house - this link is already less than 1ms, so it doesn't matter if it's improved, the amount of time it's saving is only a fraction of that 1ms. Once the data goes outside of your house you can't control how quickly it reaches it's destination.

The onboard bandwidth management is pretty cool, but a) if you give that much of a **** about pings you won't be torrenting or doing other background downloads while you game in the first place, and b) There are software alternatives to limit bandwidth that are a hell of a lot cheaper than a Killer NIC (usually built into the programs themselves).

Offloading might make a slight difference on your CPU load, and help with framerates, but CPU's are very powerful and games don't stream a tremendous amount of data anyway, so there's not much performance increase to be found there (If you were streaming at gigabit rates it would be noticable, but games only send and recieve a few KB/s.

It's a placebo.

Quite, it's garbage and just marketing. The only performance boost it can realistically give you is a dropping some load from the CPU (which any TOE NIC can do, doesn't need to be this heap of marketing) but for the money you'd be an order of magnitude better just buying a faster CPU. It can also in theory improve cut through time on the local link but being as on board NICs are <1ms it's impossible to measure and pointless.

A faster CPU and better ISP would be better investments in every way.

Was just correcting lag figure. ie 1s = 1000ms not 100ms. Hopefully I got it the right way round, I just assumed he would be talking in 100s of milliseconds, as that has been the order of the lag discussed in this thread - not 1000s of ms.

Yes sorry, that is correct. :)

yes i am on fibre optic i downgraded i am on 20mbs connection now

I'm on a 3Mbit ADSL line.. :p

From what i've seen of it it's only of use if you haven't got a good router. If you have a router with QOS and a proper firewall you lose a lot of the advantages.

but of course this network card just made your gaming SO much better. This "killer" nic is a scam.

They sell these things to people like you that don't even know what "tracerts" are

Can i ask you why my pings improved so much from obard to the killer?

I still enjoy using it and wont stop even if it helps out 2ms programs and features are worth it =p cant wait for the improved audio processor app too it will allow us to use a usb headset and run the software on the nic, i myself use a logitech g35 it uses up 10mb or ram

Your pings havn't improved, you just think they have. Infact, your pings are double to mine and I used onboard.

So I guess if I buy a Killer NIC card I will get atleast 1ms if the improvements reduce my ping by atleast 20ms?

Any soundcard today uses it's own onboard chipset, so the killer NIC is null.

10mb??? And you've got how much RAM in your system?

just got my ssd and windows 7 and a decent router, my pings are much better now im getting 0.2mb more upload then i ever got before

If you have a highly saturated connection, I could see the QoS for various programs helping performance, but otherwise there's no point. Pretty much any decent software firewall can do the same (I'm pretty sure Sygate could).
