Just curious how many of you here pick up DVD/CD/Bluray's at a supermarket? In the past I always thought it was more of a gimmick, that people don't really by much of these things in the supermarket, just the occasional title if it catches your eye.

However this week at work we are shipping out 650k units of Avatar for Sainsbury's alone ready for Monday and daily we pretty much send out anything from 80k-150k cd's/dvd's/books to Sainsburys. It really does seem that more and more people are buying their media at supermarkets.

i buy some stuff from tesco because i get discount :D

people are buying more cd/dvd/games from supermarket's because they are most of the time cheaper and you can get everything in one shop now.

i dislike going into town nowadays because of the various shops you have to go in to buy what you need.

i haven't purchased a game from shop's for over a year now.

steam is my friend and tesco....well....i can get what i want at a discounted rate.

I think for books and movies amazon and play beat the supermarkets, but then don't forget that not everybody uses them. Supermarkets are where people regularly shop more than the high street it's convenient to pick it up on a weekly shop.

I tend to just use supermarkets for DVDs if I happen to be in there and something catches my eye or occasionally if I'm cooking for friends and see a film to watch that night. Anything other than that and I'd normally use an online store as a couple of days extra waiting time doesn't bother me for that.

See we also supply play and amazon and the volumes we do for both combined are less than sainsburys alone on a daily basis.

However thinking about it, we provide all studios for sainsburys but only provide BV (disney), Optimum, Contender and other smaller IRH holders like Anchor Bay for play/amazon.

I've started checking supermarkets more for new releases. The most recent being Splinter Cell Conviction which was £29, £10 cheaper than any other shops that I looked in.

SixTwoSix, does your employer distribute computer games too?

Just wondering how many PC games you are shifting if you did.

They do games as well for Sainsburys, across PC, PS3, X360, WII, DS...couldn't get it split down to qty's though, we just get the forecast across games/dvd's/vd's/books daily.

EDIT: Thinking about it, the PC volumes are low as they only stock the best selling games, iirc we only really had MW2 and Assassins Creed 2 going through over the last few months. We do however supply blockbuster for all of the UK as well and they have a lot more PC games.

By any chance do you work for Technicolour?

I work in-store for said supermarket retailer, we often get pretty massive deliveries of DVDs & games in, although the biggest frustration is often that we don't get what we do need. We've been out of stock of FIFA10 and Uncharted 2 for over a week now, for example, despite both games being a key part of a PS3 promotion we have. Rather annoying. Means I keep getting called over to sign receipts to say the game can be collected when we do get stock.

Same thing happened with the Wii stunt we did, we got 60 consoles delivered 3 days before the offer ended, and yet were short for about a week and a half before that.

For the person asking about PC games, obviously my experience is at a store level but they aren't popular at all. I think maybe we've sold one or two in the past 3 weeks, and I'm not sure we've sold any copies of the newly-released GTA Episodes on PC yet.

The PS3 is doing rather well, we've sold quite a number of consoles over the last few weeks whereas we've perhaps only sold two 360s. Wii games are the most popular by far, they seem to just fly out sometimes.

Guilty as charged :D

We only supply what we're asked for, we pick & despatch for sainsburys constantly for up to 16 hours a day but can only supply what we actually have in the warehouse. From that point of view we are in the same boat as you, if you're waiting for stock, we're also waiting for it from the manufacturers.

I'd go to a supermarket before hmv any day, they seems to buy more in-bulk which means more discount for us. I guess because they get more people through the door they sell more to less likey buyers.

Mostly buy online, however if i see something in the supermarket at a reasonable price ill pick it up.

Never bought anything there personally although I can see why they do sell well, what's a tenner for DVD/Blu Ray/CD when you're doing £100+ of family shopping. People are more inclined to impulse buy in that environment and I got to say that prices have been getting more attractive/competitive lately too.
