Can one attach a spare wheel to the bonnet of a car (in particular, a 1.1 Citroen Saxo). What are the laws regarding this (ie. visibility?)

I have no idea, I don't see why not though if it doesn't impare you visibility, some Land Rovers have them on the bonnet's do they not ? ...if there are any issues they will likely be health and safety ones, i.e. pedestrian safety etc or indeed your own if that wheel should fly through the windscreen and hit you in the face ...or fly off and through someone else's.

I really don't know though, an interesting if somewhat strange question though. One I don't recall seeing before :p

Can I ask why you want to do this though?

Just space issues on this rally we're doing, but struggling to find the optimal place for everything. The problem is, when we just put a wheel on the bonnet, it probably took up about 25% of the height of your visibility when you're in the driving seat

Pack less stuff and put the wheel in the back where it belongs, if it has to go outside put it on the roof.

Well at least it's a good reason, not just trying to make a Saxo look like an old Group B rally car then :p

I guess you don't have the space to attach it to a roof rack ? ...since I guess you are already using one to carry supplies.

Interesting, very interesting actually. Sounds like quite an adventure. Saxo's don't float though, so I hope you have a plan for crossing the Caspian Sea :p ...also I can't help but think a Saxo is ...not exactly the choice I would have made for this trip, something larger and more robust ...with 4 wheel drive would have been what I would have gone with I think, like an old Isuzu Trooper or something, you can buy those for next to nothing now and they are tough as old boots.

Roofrack is so much better...

My brother's 205 when he did Plymouth-Dakar in 2003.

Pack less stuff though, ipod, football? Pft. Don't need them,

Half the fun is using a small hatch...also it depends on the rules of the rally as the cars are usually sold at the end so have to meet certain requirements.

has to be less than a 1.2, and a 2 wheel drive!

We did think about roof rack, but the box and rails were free! Thanks for the link, interesting so see what others have done to prepare.

I think i'd rather take an ipod over anything else! Football etc you're right though, luxuries if we have space

Aye, free roof box is great, just limiting in space...but free is free. :)

Some of the later years of the Plym-Dakar have much more mentalist cars....also my brother went quite mental with modifications on the 205...but he can wield a welder well enough so it worked out fine...engine/sump guard are good examples. If you go to the links at the bottom, the other pages have fun shots and information. :p

The main site that is hosted on is dire, but there are loads of cars on there from over the years with loads of information. :)

I have to say, a couple of spare rims (with tyres) and a couple of spare tyres without rims could be a better option if space is limited.

But yes, spare wheels WILL be needed.

Why? It's common knowledge that many corrupt officers will not allow people to pass through boarder checkpoints without being given some cash.

Yeah, a few guys on here have said that was possibly the only downside to the entire trip (after the novelty had worn off), which is a shame. Ah well> I'll play the dumb tourist well I think

Did you even think that reply though? At all?

They are going to be pretty likely to need AT LEAST one spare.

Oh, yes i did, very much so, the best part of 40 mins :P

I had the post open in a tab, i hadn't hit refresh to see the reply

Now i have seen above reply, i fully understand and i can only suggest a roof box OR see if you can attach them to the doors?
