Hi Guys

My brothers pc speakers (little dell things) have been playing up, volume going up and down and in general playing up. He wants to spend no more than £60. They wont be going too loud and just for music and gaming.

this looks like it fits the bill.

there are also the cheaper edifier e1100 plus (i know zero about these)

he seems quite set on the more attractive speakers as both of the above are quite good looking speakers (or as attractive as people can find speakers anyways). Any others out there pepole know of? What would you lot buy?

Also i notice the x210's from logitech have a headphone out which would be ideal as he is looking at getting some hd555s or something along them lines, are there other speakers out there with this trait within the price bracket?

One thing I will say about the headphone socket on speakers, they are normally crap. They work, but the difference in sound quality between plugging them into the speakers headphoen socket and plugging them directly into the sound card/device will be very noticecable. I compared the headphone socket on my old Creative T6100 speakers, which were connected to my X-Fi sound card, to being connected directly to the sound card. When the headphones were plugged into the speakers, the sound was a lot less clear. The headphone socket on speakers is a handy feature for people who care not about the sound quality, or if someone has poor quality phones. If your brother is looking at getting quality phones like the HD555 at some point, I wouldn't choose a particular set of speakers just because it has a headphone socket. Using a splitter cable is a far better way of connecting both to the same socket on the sound card, for sound quality. The downside is you can't mute or turn off the headphones, without unplugging them. Which is a pain to go round the rear to do that. I would certfainly put up with that, than put up with the muffled sound that comes from connected headphones to speakers headphone socket.

I know you've said 2.1 speakers but if you dont need boomy bass from a subwoofer, I can highly reccommend the Creative gigaworks t20 or t40.

The fronts are gloss black and the cones yellow as you can see and look pretty stylish. I personally have the T40's that cost me about £70 and have 2 mid/bass drivers per speaker. They make a suprising amount of bass without being over the top or sounding muddy or boomy. The clarity is superb.

OK so they don't have the oomph of my logitech z5500's 188watt subwoofer but they make up for it in lovely sound quality. I can pick out parts of music and game sound effects better than the logitech's. FLAC audio files sound superb.

Just something to consider if you don't mind not having a subwoofer.

Thanks for the heads up mate, i'll tell him not to base his decision on that feature then.

He's very limited on surface desk space so he wants tiny little satellites but has a shelf under his desk to fit a sub so 2.1 is better and hence the appeal of the altec lansing's, however i shall mention them to him.

logitech z4 are worth a look.

My brother mentioned them to me when i got in today, they look ideal, seems there's a toss up between them or the altec's who will win i wonder. If we do go altec i might write up a little review and put it on here as there doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews on them really. Cheers for the suggestions guys.
