This is Kingston Hyper X but it says 400mhz?

Maybe useful or not but i had some Kingston Hyper X memory that was coming up as 800mhz in windows but was meant to be 1066mhz memory. I had to change a option in the bios to get windows to see the memory as 1066mhz

This was extremely helpfull I just double checked the ram as I purchasd the PC 2nd hand and indeed it is 1066Mhz what options did you change int he bios.

With the risk of sounding completely niave if the pc is recognising it as 800mhz does it mean thats what its running at or is it still running at its rated speed. Thanks

Just checked and the option to change my ram frequency is greyed out in the bios.

.

Il tell you what i did but iv got a different board to you, iv got a BIOSTAR TA790GX so guessing options might be a bit different.

1. Change the t-series over clock navigator to manual
2. Go in to DRAM configuration
3. Change memory clock mode from auto to manual, which then lets me do the next step as its greyed out other wise.
4.Then change the memclock value to DDR2-1066

there was a further option to change the timing but iv left that on auto as i dont know what im doing there BUT the timings it gives are not the timings its says on the Kingston website. but as everything is running ok for me im not to worried about it....Just for the Reference im getting 5-7-7-24 but Kingston website say's 5-5-5-15. An im not sure what the difference is with the timings or which is best.

I dont really know the answer to this but im guessing windows will only run the memory at the settings in the bios its set to run at. So if bios is set to 800mhz windows will run it at that.

Hello imamosher! :)

The memory in your screenie is running at 400MHz (DDR2-800) which is the BIOS default speed for most fast DDR2 when used with an AMD system . . . Kingston Hyper X comes in both DDR2-800 and DDR2-1066 formats? so saying it's Hyper-X isn't really that relevant to "knowing" what the memory is rated at? :D . . . . what does it say on the sticker attached to the memory heatspreader?

Sorry mate, should have made it a bit clearer, the ram is meant to be 1066Mhz however Bios is showing it at 800Mhz.

Going to try what mrfun1981 said and see if I can get it changed that way.

Am I likely to see any performance increase with the difference in speed?

Thanks

It will say the speed on the sticker located on the stick of RAM, usually along with timing and warrenty void if removed.

My guess is either PC6400 (800mhz) or PC8500 (1066mhz)

Look on the SPD tab of CPU-z instead of the Memory tab and it should provide you with model numbers which you can google for the specs. Easier than pulling the memory out.

Also it running at 800mhz is merely because thats what the SPD table will tell it to do, due to compatability. BIOS's are set to boot with memory at 1.8v typically and the faster 1066mhz stuff requires at least 2.0v - 2.1v to boot, so the SPD tables are written for compatability and require you to manually set the faster specs.

Yeah I was going to suggest the same thing ubern00b but this is how Kingston HyperX DDR2-1066 looks in the CPU-z [SPD] tab! :D

imamosher, if your sure your sticks are DDR2-1066 (printed on label) then you have two options to get the RAM running at full speed

  1. Change the memory frequency (multiplier) in the BIOS which will speed up your sticks but decimate the timings to something like 7-7-7-X, these should then be manually set to 5-5-5-X if possible . . .
  2. Leave the memory frequency (multiplier) as it is and instead adjust the HT ref. Clock from 200MHz to 266MHz, that will get the sticks running at DDR2-1066 5-5-5-X but will also overclock the rest of your system (CPU/CPU-NB/HT-Link) unless you drop all their respective multipliers . . .

Option #2

im struggling to find an msi mb 790GX that accepts ddr2, on their site there are only 2 options and both are ddr3.

could u point us in the direction of ur mb please?

my hyperx 1066 loooks the same too, its nothing to worry about at all.

ur mb and cpu accept 1066 ram so thats a good start. go to cell menu and set fsb/dram ratio to manual, then adjust the ram frequency setting to 1066, then adjust the timings in the "advanced dram configuration" menu, and finally set the dram voltage to 2.2V :)

(edit: page55-57 of the manual should help a bit.)
