First Car..

I wouldnt consider either sporty, but they're avoiding the typical "17 year old in a small car" syndrome.

the 306 D Turbo would be ideal - pretty fun, stylish and fairly cheap to run.

With the mondeo, you're risking "old man" comments from your mates, but they're very good cars

Will take a look at a 306 , Cheers :)
As with the mondeo, well I dont really care what my mates say.

I seem to be getting varying advice on insaurance..

As with regards to mods, I wont be touching my first car , it will remain at stock.

I think its because insurance is actually a dark art that at times can make very little sense. In general I've always been under the impression that its best to stick with the small group 2 / 3 cars to get the best prices. However from posts on here, other friends who have started with other cars and running a few test quotes myself its not always the case.

Essentially you either need to go for the low powered stereotypical cars that will keep the quotes cheap (no SXIs or GTIs for example) or if moving to bigger engines stick with your relatively safe cars that arent often driven by high risk drivers and thus have lower ratings.

Its not always about the insurance group, and basically its down to you getting your own quotes to see which works out best for you.

Certainly don't consider fronting though, at best you wont get caught and will end up spending more in the long run, at worst you could end up using your license, with 6 points, and a large fine.

Good lord, are you sure you're 15?

The mondeo will give you better value for money and possibly cheaper insurance quotes.

Please do ignore the suggestion to front on the insurance - a simple read of the policies or T&Cs will tell you that the insurance wouldnt be valid. The main driver is the one who is driving the car the majority of the time, so if it's just you driving the car then it has to be you.

Adding parents as named drivers is legal - there's nothing to say they have to drive the car. I have my dad on my insurance as a "just in case", but the fact that they might be driving it does decrease the risk and therefore the cost

Yes I'm sure I am 15 :p . Why ? :p
Mondeo it is then , Would prefer that over a 306.
Will ignore the fronting advice..
Doesn't sound like it is worth adding my parents on the insurance.

I'm 17, I'm about 9-10 months into my first year of driving. I drive a 1.6 '97 astra, the first years insurance cost me £2200. Even 1.0 Corsa's were going to cost me around the £2k mark. With inflation I dare say it's going to cost even more now. But I've been looking at quotes for when I turn 18 in May, and the cheapest I can get is about £850, which is still a lot of money, but a damn lot cheaper.

Diesel estates seem to be about the cheapest vehicle to insure though. You certainly wont be able to insure anything slightly 'fun'. Although my 1.6 astra does go pretty well, despite the handling being nothing special it's quite nice to drive.

I honestly suggest you give it a try. Adding parents as named drivers (so your still the main driver) is perfectly legal and has saved me just over £200 on this years policy. Just try adding one as a second driver on one of your quotes and see the difference it makes.

Its also handy as if they ever need to drive your car for any reason they can do it fully comp on your own insurance (assuming you go fully comp).

You just seem to have a very mature attitude - there are people in their 20s here who are much less mature!

It definitely is worth adding your parents to the insurance, can make a fairly big difference to a first time driver, plus it's always handy in case they need to use it

Just have. Thats GPS idea seems to be a great one

Indeed it does, but just factor in if you manage to go out after 11 12 times in a year it would add £540, its an awful lot for one night of late driving a month so you would have to make sure your really committed to not driving after 11.

To be honest, how often do you need to drive after 11pm anyway? I very, very rarely do - the only times I have been is to go for a hoon...which I guess is the point!

Nowadays, rarely. When I was 17/18..... all the time, it would have killed me to not be able to drive late at night.

What were you doing though? Up to no good? :)

I was the same at that age, but I think that's why they can make the insurance so cheap

Drive something cheap and crap for 2-3 years (on your own insurance) then get something decent later when you a) won't crash and b) won't have to pay silly insurance

Checking out birds on the high street in town going into nightclubs etc, driving to McDonalds, hammering down backroads, that sort of thing :D

Now then I'm only 15 at present but having just been told I have to pay for the car+all extra costs by myself , I am going to have to start saving.
Already got 1K saved away but plan to add to that.

not that it helps much but for what its worth i think thats a little harsh.

As a parent i'm all for making my lad learn the value of money and not having a silver spoon.

But equally for helping your kid out if they're willing to contribute too. To say you've saved 1k already at 15 is good going.

As for sensible advice, your first years insurance will likely be more than a grand. Get some quotes run and get an idea of how much your insurance is going to cost, then get something as cheap and chearfull as possible that wont blow up on you. Something like a £1000 fiesta or something.

Chiiives the best car you could go for in my opinion is a snotbox with 12 months tax and MOT.

That way if it breaks, you don't really care about it and also you can have a go at fixing it yourself saving yourself some cash down the line when you want to do an oil change or change your brake discs etc.

Run that for a year or two and build up some no claims and then you can start upgrading :)

Ohh yeah and don't front. Get your own fully comp insurance and build up your NCBs.

seconded. a £1000 banger is a £1000 banger no matter if its now or 2 years time. It will just be on a Y plate instead of T plate (or whatever ! lol)
