Now then I'm only 15 at present but having just been told I have to pay for the car+all extra costs by myself , I am going to have to start saving.
Already got 1K saved away but plan to add to that.

Basically , I don't want a generic Corsa or fiesta. Out of interest I ran a insaurance quote on a Mazda-MX5 (Mid 1990's one) and the cheapest quote was £5500 . And then I ran one on the 2000 Peuegot 406 coupe and the cheapest was £8000:eek:. Didn't expect them to be so pricey , but there you go.

What I want is something different i.e (Not a generic fiesta/punto/corsa) sporty , fairly quick and cheap to run. Of course If i'm being way too specific and am Never going to get anything other than a generic supermini then please say :p.

Have to say, I admire your attitude - planning for the car 2 years in advance is very rare, as so many people around here demonstrate!
Thank you :)
Infact in the two years it will take you to even be legal, car prices and insurance might be completely different, so why are you asking now ?
I am asking now because I want a rough idea of how much cash I need to save on a car and how much I can spend on other things.
I am well aware that the market will be hugely different by then.
Dont look into that, its fronting and not legal (the going on your parents insurance as a third party).
In regards to the quotes your getting are you running them as if you were 17 and just passed?
Yes I am running them as If I had just passed and was 17.

You can get them down a fair bit by adding your parents as named drivers to your policy (which is legal, the other way around definitely isnt! So please ignore the suggestion above) and shopping around.

I personally found that the small hatchbacks you mention cost much more to insure than more "grown up" cars, so if larger saloons and hatchbacks appeal then you're probably in luck. My first car was a Pug 306 1.8 which I replaced 6 months later with a Mondeo 1.8 TD - both cheaper to insure than a corsa or fiesta

I had a feeling that the suggestion above was dodgy. Thank you for clarifying.
On to your second point , Thats good news , I find Small hatchbacks boring and generic. Would prefer somthing larger like a 306 or mondeo :)

I wouldnt consider either sporty, but they're avoiding the typical "17 year old in a small car" syndrome.

the 306 D Turbo would be ideal - pretty fun, stylish and fairly cheap to run.

With the mondeo, you're risking "old man" comments from your mates, but they're very good cars

Will take a look at a 306 , Cheers :)
As with the mondeo, well I dont really care what my mates say.

I seem to be getting varying advice on insaurance..

As with regards to mods, I wont be touching my first car , it will remain at stock.

Good lord, are you sure you're 15?

The mondeo will give you better value for money and possibly cheaper insurance quotes.

Please do ignore the suggestion to front on the insurance - a simple read of the policies or T&Cs will tell you that the insurance wouldnt be valid. The main driver is the one who is driving the car the majority of the time, so if it's just you driving the car then it has to be you.

Adding parents as named drivers is legal - there's nothing to say they have to drive the car. I have my dad on my insurance as a "just in case", but the fact that they might be driving it does decrease the risk and therefore the cost
Yes I'm sure I am 15 :p . Why ? :p
Mondeo it is then , Would prefer that over a 306.
Will ignore the fronting advice..
Doesn't sound like it is worth adding my parents on the insurance.

Wow this thread has grown whilst I have been in school :p
With a mondeo someone has pointed out that it will be harder to park , considering I will have only just started driving. Not sure if this should be a deciding factor in what car I end up with.

Also the mk1 Seat leon has caught my attention. Worth a look?

Thank you to everyone for the advice so far. Very helpful :)

Well it's nonsense anyway - I rarely came across parallel spaces that my old Mondeos (mk1 and mk3) wouldnt fit in, and it wasnt any more difficult to get into those than any other car. In some older multistoreys and other car parks with rows of spaces, the nose sticks out a bit but never had any problems.

Leon's are pretty nice cars, take a look at the Toledo Mk2 though. Same car as the Mk1 leon, just in saloon form, which helps with insurance - was stupidly cheap to insure for me

oooo , I do like that toldeo ;) . Which is better overall mondeo or toledo?

thought about a classic? Might be a bit mad, and might not be something your interested in, but you'll save a fortune on insurance.

ahaha , just read your thread nice car you got there :).
I would think about it , but I haven't a clue how to do a thing on a modern car let alone an old one.

Hmmm , the mk1 focus looks like it might be a better option. For a grand I can get a 5 door 129,000 mile focus (GHIA trim level) and if there at this price now what will they be at 2012 :D .
Off to run some insurance quotes now.

WTF , Cheapest quote I can get on mk1 focus(1.4 engine) is £2000. set my age to 18 and added parent to policy. is this a decent quote or can I get it lower.
Also my mother seems to think that to get a decent quote I should be driving something with a 1.2 or below engine.

hmmm , update. got a £1300 quote for a 1.0 polo. is this a decent quote?
edit. just got a £1200 quote for a clio that is 1 year newer and has lower mileage.. decent quote?

hmmm , well theres very little difference insurance wise between the clio , 106 , or fiesta. Which one is the best overall car?
