Hi.

I'd like to know whether a Mercedes C180 coupe is a decent car, in terms of; cost, reliabilty, handling etc etc.

I'm looking to sell my Focus and get something a little less "old-manish".

The C180 looks alright, has a great spec list and is on par with the value of my Focus currently.

Would it be worth buying/considering or is it a hairdresser's car?

I think an old mercedes IS an old mans car :D

TBH it is a bit of a hairdressers car, its like 'My First Mercedes' for young'ns. Same kind of buyers who buy those convertible versions of boggo hatchbacks and Mini Ones..... suffice to say there's loads in brentwood. And thats in Essex if you wanted to know!

I completely understand that however I just fancy something a little exotic and sporty without it being a BMW-chavmobile.

Is there anything else worth mentioning?

I love the 406 coupe but it's insurance needs are tooooooo great.

It isn't a Coupe, it isn't exotic and it isn't Sporty.

It is a a C Class hatchback with a misleading name. The true C Class Coupe is the Mercedes CLK.

It is Mercedes version of the BMW 3 Series Compact and the Audi A3.

On that basis, there's no reason to get one.

My Focus is certainly more preferable than either of those.

Go and drive one, make sure its an auto and see if you like it.

One thing to let you in on, it uses a lot of fuel compared to other hatchbacks (the supercharged auto at least).

My Mum has an Auto 180K and she want's to trade it in because she is using a lot more fuel than her last car, understandable as it was a 1.4 206 quicksilver :p

They are suprisingly nice to drive, very comfy, the auto box is quite responsive and seems to idle at a higher speed than other autos I've used (if you know what I mean) which gives the car a lot of poke.

Space wise... about the same leg room in the back as a 3-coupe but with a bit more headroom. I'd prefer to sit behind someone in my brothers 3-door focus than my Mums C-Sport Coupe, but then I would prefer to sit behind someone in my Mums coupe over my 3-series coupe :(

Gadget wise, for a Merc it is pretty limited as standard so look around for ones with all the options ticked.

In my opinion, it is nice to drive and even with the auto it is easy enough to get the back end out and have some fun, although I'm sure a manual would provide even more.

I personally prefer my 3-series (obviously) but if you don't mind compromising performance or you have no qualms about looking like a fairy then I'd say go for it, or take one for a test drive at least.

We had two C180 Sports Coupes and they're really nothing special.
We had only had them for 2 years from new so general reliability and solidity were good, but I've no idea how they hold up.

Sports Coupe is a dubious name as the 140bhp 180K certainly isn't sporty, so I can't imagine an NA 180 will be particularly good.

There's better around for the money, like the 3 series compact.
The only reason we got the Merc was for the panoramic sun roof.
But with the Evolution kit it looked quite nice, AMG pack even better.

Very safe too, as my parents unfortunately discovered after a non-fault head-on collision.

My mum had an auto c230 sports coupe kompressor and it was alright but nothing to write home about. It also ate suspension bushes like a mofo.

Wasn't fast at all, so the c180 must be pretty painful

Also depreciated 20 grand in 3 years, result

All boring with substandard interiors and Mercedes handling. If you want a Mercedes and the compromises they come with, get a proper one so that you also benefit from the huge upsides that they come with.

Failing a proper one get a BMW. "normal" C-class' have nothing going for them as far as i am concerned.

Only have experience of a C180k coupe, pre facelift (no clear headlights iirc).

Very softly sprung suspension, meant it was one of the most comfortable town cars i've passengered in.

Push it though, and it's a bit of a woolly, wallowy sort of affair :(

The C180 is slow, typically poorly specified and rather too effeminate for a self respecting man to drive.

As Jez said, it comes with pretty much all of the downsides of a typical Mercedes, but few ...if any of the upsides. Buy a proper Mercedes or get something else would be my advice.
