I am in need of a long USB extension for my printer, I have tried 5m active cables before, but they never worked.
Can anyone offer any advice, brands to go for / model numbers etc (No links, competitors rule) that will work?

Failing that, I see USB over RJ45 extension cables, do these work, any good? Anyone has any experience with them? I do not want it plugged into my network as Win7 does not play nice with the printer when plugged into my server.

Just plug the printer into the switch and configure to your computer, rather than the server.

If your usb cable isn't working sometimes it help to run it through a powered USB hub .

What printer is it? do you have a wifi network? does your printer support wifi? does it support bluetooth? does your pc support blue tooth? can you use a ethernet cable into your router or is your router near your pc?

You didnt give enough detail!

They work very well, I've used them for smartboards a few times.

Just bare in mind they're USB over Cat5, not USB over ethernet. So there's no way you can connect them to switches etc. They must connect directly between the computer's USB port and the printer's USB port.

The printer is a bog standard Laser, it doesn't have wireless or wired. It is currently plugged into my WHS (Also use it as a print server since I also have a Samsung colour laser), but Win7 (Vista did it too) takes ages to print, and pauses between pages, I have tried numerous fixes, and it is a driver issue by HP.

I know they are USB over cat5, just it was late!

I am getting an HP 1320DN so that will plug directly into my switch anyway! I just want to use up the 2 carts of toner I have for this P1006.

I think I will go for the CAT5 option, I have a couple of hundred meters of the stuff.
