Could a Atom Processor stream 1080p across a network?

im guessing not just want to rule it out/in for a fileserver cpu

If its just streaming it to another computer (2-3MB/s) then an atom can do it no problem. If you want to play it on the Atom, well that's a different story :)

From the reviews I've read the 330 can play and stream 1080p content. I own a 330 system, but never used it for HD content, just as a storage and download server.

If you're playing the file from another computer via a network then yes it can, the Atom with ION chipsets can play 1080p as well.

If you're talking about transcoding using PS3 Media Server or something similar to stream to a DNLA device like to a PS3 or Xbox 360 etc, then I believe the answer is no as it doesn't have enough grunt.

if u get the latest ones with the Nvidia ION then it should be able to do HD fine

That ^ I believe the Ion chipset is responsible for many of the miracles that little Atom can perform.

Tom's Hardware has this article on the Atom/Ion platform, and this article on Intel's most recent competitor, which gains HT, but fails to beat an Ion 330 system in everything except power consumption.

Personally imma wait for nVidia's next atom platform, hopefully get a proper chipset that can do blue-ray playback and that nice new cpu to go with it :D

Oh, sorry, misread the OP, I thought the question was can it play 1080p from a network source :D

The Atom, any version even the single core, will be quite fine with being the source of the file, it's just not that hard to throw stuff down ethernet ^^

My N330 streams data just fine over Ethernet! I can easily get 90% usage of 100Mbit when streaming large files without it breaking a sweat. I've not tried it with Gbit though.
