While I would like to tell my story in full, I don't think it would be wise at this stage in case the police are watching and find something to use against me.

I was at work last Thursday morning and it seemed like just another day then suddenly at 10am police in plain clothes turned up and arrested several of my colleagues on suspicion of something minor and escorted them out of the building. The rest of us were stunned as one would imagine, we asked questions but we were told to wait. An hour later my manager came back to explain to us what had happened (he knew the police were planning the arrests) and confirmed that these members of staff had been suspended from work. As he was explaining I was pulled out of the room and arrested as well. I wasn't given any details of why I was being arrested (only that it was on suspicion of something minor - nothing more) and they immediately confiscated my phone, keys and personal USB drive.

I was then told by my HR rep that I had been suspended as well. I asked why but no one would give me answers. I was then escorted into an unmarked vehicle by 2 other officers and driven to the police station. The officers in the car would not answer my questions either. They asked me for my address because they were going search it and sieze my computer. They also asked me where my car was parked because that was going to be searched as well.

At the police station I asked the Custody Officer why I was here but again no details were given, just the same basic regurgitated stuff that the others told me. I asked to see a solicitor and to contact a family member to let them know where I was (which I found out they did not do).

I was put in a cell for about 2 hours (although I couldn't tell because I had no watch) before they brought me the cup of tea they said they would give me when I arrived. They take my DNA, fingerprints, photograph etc then put me back in the cell. A couple of hours later they offered me a microwave meal which sounded disgusting so I asked if I could just have the apple that's in my bag - nope. Another 6 hours go by before I finally go to speak to a solicitor at 8pm. So at this point I've been under arrest for 9 hours and I still have no idea what for!

The solicitor gives me details of why we were arrested and I assure him that I was not involved (I don't want to say what it was but it was something minor, ie. it will be settled with fines and not prison sentences). All he can tell me is that they were given an anonymous tip from a "concerned citizen". We then go to the interview and I'm advised to answer the questions I feel I should answer and give a "no comment" response to those that I don't. They tell me that my desktop computer, laptop, some DDR2 RAM which the interviewing officer called "little circuit boards" :D (because they said it "might have stuff on it" ) and "several hard drives" have been siezed. I ask them for a full inventory but they said they don't normally provide this(!) - How do I know exactly what they've taken? I was released at 9pm.

So far I've heard that they found evidence at the home of only one of my colleagues. So they have no evidence against me yet they have thousands of pounds worth of my property and they couldn't tell me when I could have it back. They said "maybe a couple of months" EVEN WITH NO EVIDENCE AGAINST ME! How is it possible for one person to just give my name to the police because they "think I might be up to something" and then my life is turned upside down as a result?!

I've had to buy a pay as you go phone and I'm currently using an old P4 machine with XP SP2 that was in my cupboard (luckily they didn't take this as well or I would be shopping for a new computer too). Also the cell wasn't very clean and I've been sick for 2 days (I was fine before I went in).

Don't... do... illegal.... things???

You were probably discussing pirated software in public, or around people that would rat you out. That would be my general guess.

The moral of the story would be to keep on the right side of the law, or at least keep up appearances.

I thought they only took DNA samples for violent/sexual offences?

I believe it is now everything and anything. But if not charged or convicted you can ask for it to be removed?

I think it may have been changed, no doubt someone who knows for certain will be along . . . .

I can tell you it had nothing to do with pirated software.

Well at the end of the day it's their duty to follow up complaints, if said individual is wasting police time they can be charged with it.

If you've genuinely done nothing wrong then sure it feels a little unjust, but generally people don't make complaints unless there is due cause. It's hard to say any more without knowing what you've actually been charged with. If it's things like indecent images, financial scams/fraud or similar then they've obviously got to thoroughly check your digital storage.

Your story makes no sense. When you were arrested you would have been arrested 'on suspicion of' - you must have had some idea what they were talking about?

They didn't just turn up, throw you in a room, steal your stuff, and then throw you out again?

Will they remove your details (dna, fingers prints etc) from record if your innocent?

I think there are too many pcs, mobiles etc to forensically investigate so often it take months for them to get around to it

Will they remove your details (dna, fingers prints etc) from record if your innocent?

iirc it's a mine field at the moment, some guy supposedly had his DNA returned as an 'exceptional circumstance' and since then the police have been bombed with requests for innocent's records to be wiped. I don't think it's an actual procedure though, could be. Strikes me as something that would waste a lot of time.

Two lads who used to work for my company had something similar happen to them, They were working in some house in a proper dive! The tenant called the police up and said £200 had been stolen, Both lads were instantly arrested, Had their cars and homes searched and locked up for hours. No evidence was found and they were let go. The likely hood of there ever actually being £200 in this house was laughable, They didn't even have carpets!

Not quite sure how anyone can pass judgement without knowing the details, was it an SFO raid? SOCA? Private prosecution by one of the cable companies?

Without details other than it's 'minor' it seems a little difficult to comment really, unlucky though :p

Seems major action for something minor.

Dude, just spill the beans you can't expect to tell all the story bar the most essential piece of info.
It does sound very very harsh behaviour of them and I'm usually pro-police.

Welcome to Nazi Germany

Hardly, in Nazi Germany they didn't arrest you and charge you, then take you to a police station and give you a solicitor before releasing you. Generally they just locked you up and through away the key with no due process.

Without more details of the offence it is difficult to comment but it just sounds to me like the police are doing there jobs properly even if it is an inconvenience.
