Hi,
thanks for looking, I know this question has probably been answerd a zillion times here but there so much new stuff since I was last 'in the scene' that I dont know where to start.

Ok, thought it was time buy a new PC and experience Crysis etc (current spec is AMD 3000 2g ram / 600mb hard drive, NV7800GT1, basically plays bugger all new stuff)

The PC I have ordered is as follows :

Intel I7 860 (2.8Ghz, 8mb)
2 1TB Stripe Hard Drive
Memory - 8192mb (2x4GB)
Sound Blaster Xi-Fi Xtreme Music Card
Logitech G500 Laser Gaming Mouse

and a Radeon HD5770 Gfx card.

I was really looking foward to receiving this until I got an email telling me that the Radeons are no longer in stock and my order was replaced with a 1GB Nividia GTS 240 - with a reduction in overall price..

I did have the option of cancelling but all the finance had been arranged so it would be a major hassle.

Now, all my gaming will be done at a res of 1360 * 768.

So my question is - whats minimum priced gfx card that would give a conderable increase in performance over the GTS 240 ? (Must be a single card, dont think SLI or Crossfire is an option. (Im assuming the performance of GTS 240 wont be fantastic). Really annoyed :(

To tell you the truth, it's really suck how they take the liberty of putting the GT240 into your order to replace the 5770 without consulting with you first.

If you only gaming at that res, and you are certain you won't upgrade you monitor in the near future, then a 5750 512MB (around £85-£90) would be enough for your need.

GT240 is more or less around 9800GT's performance, so it's not THAT bad and should handle gaming at that res no problem...however it will not have dx11 support. I would try to contact them again to see if they can provide better options to choose from than the GT240.

Arg a 240 :(

Also, you dont need 8 gb of ram.. kinda overkill for gaming.

DOnt know what the price difference between dropping that to 6gb or so would be and if you could get a better card??|

Have they shipped it yet? Drop ram to 4gb and upgrade to a 5850. Should be roughly the same. Then save up for a new monitor:)

Thanks chaps, yes Ive also gathereg tht GTS 240's suck, majorly annoyed. I even called them to ask to pay more for a better gfx card and the person (at the Indian call centre) said than no changes could be made to my order as it was an 'internet order'.

Deffo will be sticking to 1360*768 - my LG has a really good pictre.

Marine, thanks for the advice on the 5750 - thats top of my list now.

Lets say I had a budget of around £150, would this make a difference or does my res dictate that a 5750 512mb be enuff.

Again thanks for the mega quick responses.

P.S gotta ask if this with the spec of my machine and an updated gfx card what kind of performance can I expect from Crysis

Sue them imo.. 240 GTS u might as well make it into a keyring.
5770 is far better personally compared to the rest of the spec id use a 5850.. not sure why u went for a i7 860 for gaming 750 is the same and oc as well.

Not an option Im afraid :) Im not a res whore either as my LG 26 " TV gives me a fab picture on my PC , 360 , and PS3 (it was crap for a WII tho, which I sold anway :) )

Seriously, I would cancel the order if they just decide to chuck in a 240 and not consult you, and then tell you they can't do anything to change it. Sounds blimmin dodgy to me.

Get on the line to your credit card company

Im hating this 240 more by the 2nd...... They DID give me the option of cancelling the order completely and I just could nt be arsed starting for scratch again - though I's stick with it and ask you guys what to replace the 240 with.

Easy answer to that - I dont have a freaking clue about the new intel chips and it was spur of the moment. :) I take it that its still a decent chip tho - dont tell me Ive totally ***** up on that as well !!!! Please !!!!

Hey bud, like I said they did give me the option of cancelling which I refused (admittedly before researching the 240 - tho I did call them once I found out it was a piece of crap GFX).

Im resigned ro replaceing the card for PC gaming goodness :)

Wouldnt worry about the cpu too much.

I'd consider canceling the entire order and going from scratch to ensure not having that 240 tho.

edit:

Sureley as a customer you have a RIGHT to change your order during a certain amount of time, nevermind before even delivery!

For the res your want to play at and a budget of £150 for a new card, Go with a 5770 :)

Realy though, I would cancel the order and shop around some more, even call OCUK sales team, I'm sure they could set you up with a better rig for the same money ?

Fair does :)
860 = hyperthreading games dont use that
750 none but performance is same if not better on somegames

Personally i would consider the 5850 i know there rather expensive atm but you would be able to play crysis the way you want it to and you allways have the option to add a second 12months+ down the line.

i'm one of those that gets the best price to longevity altho my husband prob disagrees he's still on my AMD 5200x2 we only just got around to ordering his i5 750 xD.

5850 is more future proof for you tho and would give you amazing performance *max everything* @1920x1080

You 'could' get a 5770 1GB at around £120-140, but it's not gonna make much difference in almost all the games at that res (may be except Crysis)...but for dx11 games, it 'might' provide more headroom to give higher frame rate. You'd have to decide if the extra £30-£50 investment would justisfy the amount of performance gain.
