me and a couple of friends are planning on taking a short trip to amsterdam sometime next month. sort of an end of uni blow out.
i was under the impression that its pretty expensive out there... however, one of my friends seems to think its gona cost around £1.70 a pint.

can anyone shed any light on this?

ideally Lager prices or local beers is what i will be drinking.

does anyone know the prices of these per pint??

haha thanks for that. i've looked on google, but i never no how real that info is. just wondering if anybody else has 1st hand experience

In my experience you'll mainly be drinking Grolsch or Heineken in 0.5L (0.25/0.3 for a small) measures and paying a higher rate than you would in a major city in the UK. 4e for a small beer, 7-8 for a large.

No no no. There are much better largers to drink in Amsterdamn. One place near the Dam sells over a hundred different types (and I did try a few!)

I know there are better beers, but 90% of the bars will be either grolsch or heineken distributors.

We're (well, the OP) talking an end of Uni blowout, not a beer tour afterall :p

Amstel is all i drank when i was there. Found it cheaper than the rest of the beers.

There's a nice pub/bar in the road next to the red light district. Got rather drunk there :D

Most of the generic bars I went in had Amstel followed by Heineken. The more decent bars sold a wide variety of ales and beers, mostly Belgian and mostly damn good.

Going to Amsterdam and mos grolsch tly drinking Grolsch and Heineken would be a shame in my opinion. However if you want a real larger experience then you cannot beat Germany in my opinion...

7/8 ? Either Amsterdam is excessively expensive ( top tourist spots?) or those prices are wrong.

Here in Rotterdam it's 2.30-2.50€ for a 250ml standard glass, 4.50€ - 5€ for a 500ml pint.

Still way too expensive, I'd just go to the supermarket and get 0.5l bottles for 70 cents each for the premium beers, or 35-40 cents for a (0.5l) can of cheap beer. Then drink it somewhere in a private place...
Alternatively get a 5l ( 10 pints) keg for 10-12€.

Yep in my experience, despite what some people would have you believe, the UK is generally cheaper than most big cities abroad for alcohol. New York, Stockholm, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong etc were all more expensive than here. The way the exchange rate has been lately I expect it is even worse now.

Over here I'd think twice about going back to a place charging £5 a pint (restaurants aside), but not overseas.

Rotterdam is a lot lot cheaper than Amsterdam, I am going on prices of Leidensplien, Amsterdam Square and a few of the night clubs (this was 2yrs ago aswell) friends who went at xmas said the cheapest was 5euro most expensive was 9 average was 7.

Also who wants to drink some where private when their going out?

Drink first, then go out ;).

With pubs etc I often don't ( though sometimes do and drink a few cans/bottles on the street on the way there, and hope I don't get caught, rather take the risk...) and just buy at the pub/terrace, but for clubbing and stuff I ALWAYS make sure I'm at least tipsy and shoved down 3 pints before I go in, they charge 2 ( or far more, like 4€) inside for tiny glasses of beer :(.

I know thats the dutch way (places in amsterdam dont get busy till >12) and if you are english you will be hard pushed to get in the dutch clubs unless theirs only 1 or 2 of you.

I'm back over in june for Defqon :)
