Rememebr way back in 2006 when four (according this article) were caught red handed with a rock 'device' used to trasnsmit info?

It doesn't really go into detail about the people involved except:

The diplomats were identified as two members of the political section of the British embassy in Moscow, as well as an "archivist" and a fourth man whose job was not known.

Do you think they are in jail, dead or deported? Obviously the papers have very little to go on and also need to protect their identities?

Also, in another story from the BBC link regarding the level of spy activity (in 2007), and of course the death of Alexander Litvinenko? I never clearly understood why he was killed. Clearly Russia has no problem killing people it thinks are spies so I wonder if the 2006 story any of them are alive?

Intriguing....

Being Diplomatic staff I'd imagine that they're protected by diplomatic immunity, therefore they can't be arrested and charged. The Russians can declare then Persona non grata though, which would mean that they would be deported. Besides, MI6 would have withdrawn them anyway. Once an asset is unmasked they're no longer of any use as they'll be constantly under surveillance, fed dis-information etc.

Tell that to james bond!

Probably just 'swapped out' for Russian spies. And are now over in Egypt doing their thang as no-one recognises them there ..

There is no diplomatic immunity from spying. Also spying and treason are the two things left which can, technically, result in you legally being put to death in England.

Really? Well I never knew that.

America puts people to death for treason don't they also?

Actually the death penalty for spying was abolished by the Armed Forces Act 1981, and the death penalty for treason was abolished by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

AFAIK if they are caught in the act of spying diplomatic immunity won't protect them, if they are suspected of spying diplomatic immunity will protect them from being arrested trying to leave the country, etc.
