Ok so I passed my test last Monday and I wasn't planning on getting a car just yet due to savings etc, but my Dad being an ace Dad n all picked me up a car he bought from a mate.
Problem being said car is un-taxed and was sorn, its been sat in a lockup for 6months and has just today passed its MOT with flying colours as my Dad said with a battery replacement.
This being my question, I set up my insurance over the phone Monday night with Tesco and thought nothing else of it, I have nothing to show for said insurance other than a policy number as I'm waiting on it to be posted, how do I go about taxing it? I've never had to do any of this before and my Dads basically left it all up to me.
(P.S insurance is my own policy and new driver premiums suck)

Easiest way (assuming you have the V5C) is to do it online, that way they can just check the insurance status on the MID database.

Otherwise you'll have to wait until you get the V5C and the insurance certificate and go to the post office.

I don't have any paperwork for the car until tomorrow, so I assume I can then register it in my name? I was told if I tried to do it online now it'd go to the previous owners house.

You have to send off the old V5C (minus new keeper supplement) and they mail you a new one.

You can use the tear off "New Keeper Supplement" to tax at a post office, but you need to take your Insurance Certificate and MOT Certificate with you.

Ask them to fax over a cover note :)

Which won't be accepted.

If you have a car tax disc reminder (V11 form), bring this form to your local Post Office® branch along with:

* a valid insurance certificate or cover note – photocopies, renewal invitations, facsimiles, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used
* a valid MOT (Vehicle Test Certificate) if required – your car tax reminder will tell you if you need this
* for disabled car tax class, you need to bring a valid Exemption Certificate

Unfortunately you'll have to wait for the insurance documentation to arrive from Tesco.

I bought tax two years in a row with a fax copy of the insurance certificate. Didn't know I wasn't allowed. Lucky me I guess.

Looking at this, can't you just buy it without the reminder then?

Edit: The one link for 'with reminder' is the same?

It doesn't mention anything about faxes not being accepted. Where did you get your quote from?

Post Office.

Is direct.gov.uk wrong then?

No :confused:

direct.gov says:

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

* Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
* insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

The Post Office (who are the people you must go to to get the tax disc) expands on the above by saying:

If you have a car tax disc reminder (V11 form), bring this form to your local Post Office® branch along with:

* a valid insurance certificate or cover note – photocopies, renewal invitations, facsimiles, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used
* a valid MOT (Vehicle Test Certificate) if required – your car tax reminder will tell you if you need this

Weird. You can post them a photocopy and you can do it online without it, but if you showed them a photocopy in person then they shouldn't let you.

No you can't.

From direct.gov

The following documents aren't acceptable:

* policy schedule
* renewal notice
* receipt for payment
* amended certificate or cover note - unless stamped or initialled by the insurer
* ‘legal protection’ policy certificates
* foreign certificates
* photocopies or faxes
* insurance certificates downloaded directly from the internet by the policy holder
* Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card)

I've had a faxed copy accepted at a post office counter before, just with a simple "oh come onnnnn"

Wonder why they also accept printouts of PDFs, as my insurance is online only.

I guess they're not meant to, but doesnt mean it doesnt happen
