Number Plates Fitting - Sticky pads instead of drilling?

'evening folks,

I've got some new number-plates to be put on the Saxo of chav™ (that surprising are fully UK legal actually!), but I'm not keen on drilling them... and reading around it would seem that it's quite popular to stick them on with double sided sticky foam instead.

Soo, to anyone that's done it.... where does one obtain said doubled sided sticky stuff?
And are there better brands than others or anything? As the front of the car is quite curved which I guess means it needs to be pretty strong as I'd rather not have the plates fall off .
Though thinking about it there's also the chance of them being ripped off by some chav for cloning their Saxo... :(... not that I'm suggesting anything about the fellow Saxo owner! :p

Also, how much of the stuff is needed?

Ta.

Thanks

I just used regular sticky pads. Got them from a hardware shop.

Oh right, hadn't thought of them, will have a look in there at lunch tomorrow. Guess they'll have it on a reel or something like the mains cable and coax etc?

Halfords have them with all the nuts, bolts and random fixings. One vertical strip towards each end of the plate should be sufficient.

They come in cut to size pads.

But drill them, use some tape on the plates while you are drilling to stop them cracking.

Well i always drill them, i think it looks better.

But its a personal preference thing really.

I want to put new plates on my car as they are getting a bit shabby but the screw heads are all rusted over.

Get a nice shiny new fixing kit from Halfords when you have a new set of plates made.

Just get them from halfords. You get them in 1mm and 6mm for flat or curved surfaces and there's 3 strips which is fine for one plate. Less than £3 last time I checked.

3M sticky velcro (or tape if you prefer). That does come on a reel and when I bought mine was priced per 10cm.

I went with velcro - so I can remove the plates if needs be :) Takes a GOOD pull though, and won't be knocked off by brushing past or casually grabbing them.
