Anybody knocked a bollard down before? How much will they bill me?

let them take you to court - thats too expensive and I doubt a court will make you pay that much for sliding in the snow! (although it is a risk!)

Why not?
There is absolutely no reason why you "must" slide around and crash in the snow.
Some conservative driving and the incident would never have happened.
Can't blame the weather for bad driving.

Would you feel the same if he slid into your car then decided your repair was too expensive? It'll be covered by insurance anyway and the price isn't that unreasonable.

I disagree. Cost is disproportionate to the damage done, which wasn't deliberate or malicious.

Most people don't intend on damaging another person's car.
So if you do crash - your insurance shouldn't pay out as what you did was an accident and not actually intended?

That's a different story, as that's somebodies personal property. Whereas this is council and they have funds to maintain and replace, so £700 is extortionate in my opinion.

Council's don't have free money, they only have what they take from the local population and businesses by force.

It's absolutely right that the individual should pay for the actions of the individual.

As for the £700 bill, depending on how much damage there was to the fitting etc, how many man hours were taken to fix it and so on, it's not that unreasonable.

When you think,
Say £150 for the bollard
Usual sub contract rate would be say £35 / hour. (Cheap)
That is 15 3/4 hours work.
You cannot work on your own.
7.85 hours per person (Assuming 2 people)
Cement, materials, van hire etc not included. Same as paperwork and admin costs.

Its probably not that far wrong. I would agree it does seem too much though.

How do you know he wasn't driving conservatively?

I will not say I'm the best driver in the world.
However I always adapt my driving to suit the weather conditions.
If the OP has crashed in the snow then I say he wasn't driving to suit the conditions.
Can you honestly say we have weather here in the UK that no matter how you drive you will crash?
If the weather is like that you shouldn't even be going out in it.

Snow and ice is such an unpredictable weather to cope with though. He could have been driving at 10MPH or less to suit the conditions and still had a minor slide. It's easy to say "you shouldn't of been out in it" when you dont know the circumstances. Perhaps he was trying to get home and had no other choice? Perhaps the weather appeared fine enough to drive in and he slid on black ice?

To call someone out for being a bad driver for having a minor slide in icy conditions is a bit much.
