Group work is annoying.

Well this has annoyed me, been working on a university project with an admittedly less than perfect attitude over the past couple of weeks with three other guys.

We just about finished it all save for a few bits and bobs that we've decided we don't have time to do.

Deadline today, we are supposed to present the work... its not awesome or even good but it would pass. Thing is, a couple of these guys are changing courses or whatever next year so they just don't care and won't be turning up to the presentation. The other guy, I can't even get in touch with, seems like his phone is disconnected.

So I'm only one left wanting to hand this work in; if just for the pass but I've only got a quarter of the presentation.

Totally confused as to what I'm gonna do now and very ****** off.

Rant over.

I would not worry. As long as you have done your bit of the presentation then you'll be assesed proportionally on the work you have done.

Have a word with the lecturer and explain the situation.

I too hate group work.

If people can't even be bothered to email me back then what chance of work getting done is there even more so when some one is thinking of quitting. Last semester I did an essay by myself which was meant to be a group piece with another lad (who was also meant to be in the group above and the lad who is thinking of quitting now) and he contributed **** all to it. It was worth 50% of the module and I ended up doing all of it myself and got 50% which I was quite pleased about but that's beside the point.

I also did one last semester and did most of the work myself, stepped up to arrange all the meetings etc etc but because everyone's efforts are weighted the same it doesn't matter how little work they put in they will still get the same mark as you.

It's a right **** take the amount of effort people put into it, I hate group work.

I hate group work too. My only group module last semester, we had to present a load of animations and a talk about how we did it. I was assigned to make the presentation, put all the renders together etc.

Our presentation was at 9am on a thursday, i was told i would have all the necessary files the day before at least. I got given the files at 5am thursday morning after staying up waiting for them all day. Goddamn idiots. Thanks to me pulling an all nighter to make the presentation and fix their crap files we came out with 80%, but id rather not go through that again.

I did a dissertation for my final year rather than a practical for this very reason.

A least group work in the workplace has real consequences for people that dont pull their weight....

Just get it done, do the presentation as best you can. You'll come out looking a lot better than the folks that didn't show!

btw, life, especially working life, is full of things like this. It's good that students experience it at uni.

I hate group work too, normally end up with 10-20% less grade on the module, some people are bloody hard to work with, and some people can even read/write or mainly think for themselves.

I like having all the responsibility on myself without having to worry about other peoples crap, I try to not do any modules which involve group work if possible.

No, they learn very quickly to contribute.

Then you see my point?

His problem wasn't him not working, it was his peers. When he gets a job, will it be a similar situation? Probably not, slackers in industry are dealt with much swifter. Therefore, he won't hate group work.

That's naive. Slackers are not always dealt with swiftly.. far from it, in fact.
