Mercedes SLK 280

With very thirsty v8 engine and complex ABC suspension oh and more complex roof - for this sorta money I'd avoid!

Airmatic isnt too bad, he wouldnt get a car with ABC in budget anyway. The V8's are fairly frugal too for their size, no way bad enough that it should be something to put anybody off. The roof's are very very reliable too other than seals, which are cheap.

Its not a serious suggestion anyway, its more an observation as to what i'd do :)

Yes thats the one, but it doesnt budge at all. When you say sideways, do you mean it tilts toward the door rather than the rear of the car?

Towards the door, but mum has telephone puck in there, so as Maz says it might be different?

ABC is standard on 500s.

I've never managed to get anymore than 20mpg out of a 500, but then I don't do any long journeys.

The seals - well I suppose what your idea of cheap is!

I've only ever seen the MB Bills for replacing the seals and they certainly aren't cheap, probably a lot cheaper from a decent indy.

I didn't actually know that, i thought it was in line with the W215/220. Argh, that's a spanner in the works as a potential purchase. ABC is not something i want in my life :(

Seal replacement is in the hundreds, not thousands, and will likely only ever need doing once. Mercedes are ludicrous to the extreme for every job, thats probably why the bills you have seen have been so high. Thats cheap in the context of spending £18k on a Mercedes. Fuel is a moot point at this kind of budget and type of car, surely? You dont buy a car like either of these to squabble over whether a car does 20 or 30 mpg.

Anyway, as i say. Just an out-loud thought rather than a serious suggestion :)

ABC is optional on the 350, but standard on the 500.

Seal replacement is close to £1k, and sometimes does need done more than once!

Suppose what your going to use the car for, but day to day use the 350 would be a better bet as its lighter and feels more agile even without ABC.

If I was doing 12k a year in an SL it would be a 350, 6k and then a 500.

I'd be tempted by a 350 in any event really, given that my current V8 has not seen the high side of around 2000rpm in absolutely ages. The power is wasted on me, i could avoid ABC too.

Hmm, food for thought :)

Real Mums car these arent they!

She says hers opens towards the rear, and doesnt think she has any 'phone things' :D

I think there is something wrong with the locking system and the console thinks the car is locked.

Ive found a MB service bulletin about the compartment getting stuck due to a spring somewhere failing, but I dont think this is it as there is no give in it at all, its stuck fast.

Off to MB we go, thanks for the help :)
