ATI next gen tapes out

Welcome to OCUK graphics section, it is ridled with ardent ATI supporters. They do sometimes try and come across neutral, but when pushed they soon crack.

Actually, this forum has hostorically had far more nVidia supporters. They're just all quiet because their latest generation of cards was a let-down.

Oh, and disliking nVidia doesn't mean you love ATI either. It doesn't work like that. I think nVidia could stand to take some punishment in the hope that it'll stop all the renaming, general goalpost-moving, and anti-competitive moves they've been making in the past months/years.

But under no circumstance do I want them to get into massive difficulty. Just enough to shock them a bit will do.

The elephant in the room is Intel though. They have most of the market with integrated graphics, which improve every generation.

Nvidia aren't competing on any level at the moment, but I can't say I'm too upset given how much of a **** the CEO is.

Definitely, I just want them to get in to enough trouble to force them to change their ways and stop acting the way they do.

(haven't you got a party to be at?:p)

Yep competition is best for everyone. It would be nice if we had a third force in both GPU's and CPU's but I can't see that happening considering the cost of entry into the industry.

the point being that last gen cards can run current games even with reasonably good IQ.

If I was on a 4xxx I probably would not bother with this gen but my trusty old 8800GTS is showing it's age :)

my mates 280 is still doing well and he is skipping this gen

Yes that was his point & is correct but your point was not as tessellation means nothing if its not used wisely which it has not been just like Phyxs.

Outside of demos most people cant tell the difference with tessellation on or off because its been used in areas where it makes very little visual difference & is just a waste of resources & like many things just brought into the main its more marketing for that game that it has these features just for the hell of it.
Like HDR, Bloom, & some strange reason the pee colour filter on some games all theses are over used.

Girlfriend got held up at work. She's on her way now. :)

Got the present sorted though. iTunes card. What a cop-out I am. :o

I think we'll see something Larrabee based or derived at some point. Intel put too much money into development to get nothing at all back.

LoL 4xAA is enough for me, even ATI have a load of AA options in the CCC, narrow-tent, wide tent, edge-detect, super sample AA, never touch them.

All those fancy types of AA are just a gimmick and checkbox feature really.

What a waste of a good card if you dont try these different types of AA and only run 4xAA. I really am shocked.

I love messing with Adaptive, Edge detect and sticking on 24xAA if a game could handle it on my 4870X2. It's one reason I go for a top end card so I can experiance high levels of AA and different types of AA.

Seriously guys give higher levels of AA and the different types of AA a punt. Super sampling, Edge detect and Adaptive are worth messing with. You will notice a difference from stock 4xAA. :)

I do and have used different forms of AA, however I bore quickly of them, I just use the best setting for the best performance depending on what game I'm playing.

The other kinds of AA always just look fuzzy/blurry to me.

Narrow and wide tent are utterly horrendous.

They actually give the appearance of running lower than native res.

With it on (I was playing Jericho at this time) the game looked like 1280x800 stretched over 1920x1200.

Took me ages to find out why it looked so bad (I'd set that AA without realising).

What card do you have? If its a 4 or 5 series card you should get some very good results if you use the different types of settings I mentioned in my earlier post. Its one feature I love about my 4870X2 and pc gaming. :)

I always avoid those two settings. They seem to make the IQ worst.

I would love to know what new features these new cards will have in terms of IQ. For me these are just as important as an increase in fps. :)

Doesn't AA become less important/apparant as you increase the resolution anyway?

(or am I talking out my backside?)

For me as the res goes up you can get away with less and less AA so at 1920x1080 2xAA is ok for me. Though it does depend on individual games.

Well I ask as on 1600x1200 I can't really tell the difference above 4xAA.

So that's what I run at.
