Eagle F1 GS3D's on the limit

Paradigm drives everywhere at 100%, nothing bar a racing slick will ever give him what he's after.

As for Muffin, the main problem is the simply enormous sidewall on the stock tyre size. Try a tyre with a stiffer sidewall, though of course in the size you run it will almost certainly offer less actual grip despite offering better 'feel', or go for larger wheels.

Or slow down.

humm I think i'll try the T1R's next, the PS2 prizes make me weep, thnaks

If you think the F1's have a soft side wall think again about T1-R's. Turn in and there feels a huge delay to the car actually turning.

Don't take the ****, I can't afford the 328i.

I think the bubble sidewall is the issue, but I'd benefit from something stiffer I'm sure, I'll try and hunt for some 17's

Also driven on T1R's, an OK tyre and very progressive, though they squeal way before letting go especially on roundabouts.

Heh, mine squeal too (on roundabouts or tight corners). Thought it was the tyres on the back doing it as I only had TR-1's fitted to the front recently. Guess its the front ones then.

edit: noticed the rear pressures were a bit high, should be 1.9 but were 2.3-2.4 ish!

I wasn't - my point is that if its 'letting go' its 'letting go' - tyres with a stiffer sidewall and less grip might let go in a more 'pleasing' fashion but would do so at lower speeds anyway so... whats the point?

Take the corner slower so it doesn't 'let go' and it'll be fine at the sort of speeds where you'd be 'letting go' in an inferior tyre with a stiffer sidewall?

We all know that isn't true. I wasn't exactly "up your arse" on the Hampshire meet, infact I wouldn't have typically driven any quicker than that at all.

I just like to be able to feel exactly what the car is doing, and F1 GSD3's just do NOT give that level of feedback through the e46's chassis. Tyre choice is very much a car specific thing. I for example really like the FK452 on my LCR, but have recently stuck some T1R's on it (due to stock availability of the FK452), the T1R's are godawful on the LCR, but yes on the e46 they are fine (not as good as PS2's, but still fine).

Just because you are unable to feel the small differences in feedback, doesn't mean everyone else can't either.

You also need to remember that the other trade-off when going for stiffer sidewalls is a harder ride, especially if you have low profile tyres.

Personally I've never had a problem with the Eagles. Yes, they get a bit slippy near the edge: it's called progressive breakaway I believe. I've not noticed any tendency towards grip-slip-grip-slip though, just a slow loss of traction. My experience of stiffer sidewalls is that breakaway is later, but far more abrupt, and total loss of grip occurs sooner. The eagles start earlier, but total grip loss is later.

Was out for a quite drive today, and I noticed that when the car was letting go mid corner it would slide-grip-slide-grip-slide-grip, in an almost bouncing sort of way. Is this because of the tread pattern or are all tyres like this?

thats probably down to road surface more than anything.

I'd say it is the sidewall, yeah. My F1s 225/50 R16 were brilliant on the 328i, just gripped and gripped unless I was silly and made them unstick.

I run Kumho ku31s, they have a stiff sidewall. I find them brilliant and when they do actually let go its just a progressive, controllable slide.

This is what experienced with the F1s on the 328i, my guess is the comedy sidewall that Muffin has is making the 318iS act erratically.
