Was 16-bit the best era?

I grew up with the Atari and Spectrum 48k so have seen a lot of games. However, I definitely think this gen is the best, although it's very very closely followed by the 64bit (I'm looking at you, N64! <3 )

each console / generation built on the ones before it.

ps1 brought in 3-d gaming to the masses.

ps-2 brought in online gaming.

xbox perfected online gaming.

xbox 360 / ps3 brought in HD gaming.

therefore to say which era was best would be purely based on opinion. it also depends what age you are, how much time you spend gaming, etc.

the 360 / ps3 have left me some what dissapointed, GTA 4 was a huge let down, compared to GTA 3 which completely revolutionised the game. saints row 2 was better that gta in single player, yet saints row 1 beats saints row 2 in multiplayer. i think the people working at games companies have gotten older and are missing vital points now, they need to inject some fresh blood into their development teams. or every game should have an open forum when it is being developed, where gamers can go on and tell them exactly what they want. what things to keep and what to remove.

Very true, a lot of current titles are like this. Even when you are in one of the more "free play" parts of the game there is often lots of little "scripted parts" where it's little more than a movie.

The 16bit games were generally a lot more linear than these games if you look at the bigger picture, saw modern warfare for example(being the most movie like that I have played)
Yes you only really had 1 outcome to everything, but you could take different routes and use different tactics... whereas with the 16bit side scrollers what could you really do other than move right..?

Golden Axe & Streets of Rage etc were classics though, dont get me wrong, we need more experiences like that in the current gen.

Dreamcast started online gaming for consoles. I think the SNES had online as well. lol.

God of War

I may be well off the mark but I believe the Saturn also had the ability to go online. I swear I can remember a mag article or similar about it, plug in modem that went into the slot behind the disk drive. Anyhoo, I jumped the 16bit era and went from a Master System to a Saturn never owned a Mega Drive or SNES :( I had wanted a PS1 but parents bought me and my bro a Saturn. I was gutted when I unwrapped it, however nothing Sega Rally didn't solve :)

I think the dreamcast was really underrated as a console it was basicly a arcade machine in your home. there version of quake 3 with a mosue and keyboard was awesome. It was a shame the service was pay per min though and i got a few nasty phone bills.

I think get set raido was the first to use cel shaded grpahics.

Phantsy star online was the first console online rpg and is still properly the best today.

Shenmue was one of the most ambtious and expensive games ever, when i first played that game it blew me away.

The list goes on i had about 20+ games for my dreamcast all of them would all be rated over 90% in reveiws.

I think where it falied a bit was the pads and marketing.

I would say the best era for me gaming wise was the ps1 saturn and n64 era, most of my friends had a ps1, so i got to play the likes of wipe out gta desturtion derby, gran triusimo. I had a saturn, where you got arcade games like sega rally virtual cop. Then i had a n64 where multiplayer gaming was king, mario kart, golden eye, perfect dark, smash brothers to name but a few. Not to mention games like mario, zelda, turok. You know a console is good when your friends buy their own controllors for it just so they can play it.

A great time to be a gamer in your teens :) I miss those days.

I find that my memories are more colourful than the reality now.
My memorys are getting my first spectrum, wow at the time. I got the commodore 64 that was about the same wow factor. Then came the Amiga, that made me go wow again. Next was my first console the NES. Mario had me waking up at 400am, so i could get a few hours gaming in before school, aswell as a few tellings off for doing so.
A while later i saw sonic on a friends megadrive and had to get one. Then the super nintendo with its mode 7 or whatever it was, enabling games like mario kart. Mario Kart multiplayer has some of my best gaming memories.
Then ps1, wipeout, die hard trilogy, tombraider, that christmas is the one i always remember. Xbox and Halo..... 3dfx card for my pc (the thing that got me into pc gaming).
Each gen since then have impressed me, but not to the heights it used to. Not until recently, 3d vision on 80 inch projection screen (zero ghosting) is the latest WOW.
Anyways, for me the thing is, throughout the years i have had many great games, but when i go back to these old skool games on the earlier gen consoles, the games seem a big letdown. Biggest was Mario Kart, it wasnt rubbish, but i wondered how i spent so many hours on it.
When i was a kid i would only get 2 maybe 3 new games a year. These games would last me. Now that i have been spoiled over the years, 3 snes type games a year would not be enough.
Maybe as i get older my imagination gets weaker, or my standards get higher. But one last shout out to the latest wow factor, 3d vision! Easily equals the feeling i got for some games during my 16bit era.

Sorry, i just realised this is the console thread, i wouldnt have included the non console gaming devices!

The 16bit era brought me super mario world, which is the best game ever,so it was the best era.Anybody that doesn't agree with MY opinion is clearly retarded:p

I must say I did enjoy the 16-bit era:D. It was a lot more satisfiying when you completed a game. For instance NHL93 when you one the championship you got a clip of the players going up and recieving the cup and celebrate now you get nothing but maybe an achievement.

Tempted to buy one of those mini megadrives but apparently the video quality on them isn't as good.

I think times and memories change. I love some older games but some of them which I used to love, I now find it unbelievable that I actually used to like them!!

whilst 16bit was good i do think the 32bit ps/saturn era was much better, sega rally, burning rangers, daytona, nights all still stick in my mind as amazing games

When I say 'extensively', I mean over a hundred hours on most of the aforementioned systems.

I did more than a hundred hours on COD4. :p :D

My favourite generation of consoles has been the sixth gen era. I never had or played on a Gamecube but I did own a Dreamcast and a PS2 and still my favourite of all consoles is the Dreamcast. It was an amazing bit of kit at the time, just a shame the PS2 came out and ****ed all over it. :(

Have owned all the consoles from 8 bit and upwards bar any sony offerings.

The best era for me was the Nintendo 64. Probably due to the fact I was in my teens and well into gaming then. It was a time when I used to unlock everything in a game that was to do. Nowadays I dont have the interest to do that.

So for that reason 64 bit all the way.

I would imagine in 10 years time asking the same question, the folks on the forums about our age now would probably say the Xbox360 / P23 era was the best.:)

N64 era without a doubt. 4 player splitscreen was truely awesome and a lot of the games were built around that. You just will not get that anymore in todays digital age plus the fact im too old now and too tied down to get 4 friends together for a bash at my house. :(

With my rose tinted glasses my Megadrive days have fond memories as do those of the Speccy 48. However on re-visiting the games (compilation packs etc.) they don't quite hold the magic they used to... The original Playstation days of Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Destruction Derby are just golden, and graphics aside play just as well today. You know I never thought I would say that over the Megadrive!
