Upgrading to a 955 or 965 but before need a little advice.

  • 955 is usually £20 or so cheaper than the 965.
  • 965 has an increase of .2GHz but an increased stock voltage.
  • Both are Black Editions.

The only difference to my knowledge is the increased Hz due to increased Voltage for £20?

Just want clarification before I buy.

Thanks.

According to OcUK part no. the 555 they are selling is the C2 stepping, the 965 is C3.
M is C3 stepping and runs @ 1.375v, I is C2 and runs 1.4.

Apart from clock speeds the same revision are essentially the same, one may argue the higher binned part has more headroom, but I think its luck of the draw TBH.

there aint much difference cause they both have unlocked multis. 965s MIGHT have been cherry picked at the fabs because they MIGHT OC higher, but im just speculating on that.

the only thing to watch for is stepping. both chips have a C2 and a C3 stepping. obviously the C3 is the one to go for, but its more common to find the 965 C3 than the 955 C3

Thats all I would suggest, generally C3's do have more headroom and higher overclocks because of it, but as aforementioned it really is luck of the draw at times

I ordered a 955 this week and can confirm its a C3 stepping from overclockers :)

I guess it depends on what you're planning on achieving with them. I have a 955 and can only get 3.6GHz stable using air cooling. I guess there's potential to squeeze a little more out of 965.

I have to say though that i've been really pleased with my 955. It tears through everything I throw at it. Admittedly i've not used an i7 but it was a huge step up in performance from an X2.

Also happy with my 955 C3; does 3.6 at under it's stock 1.375 VID, cruises through the graphics work I do where my old C2D @ 2.66 would really struggle and hiccup. Gets a little toasty with a zalman 9700 on silent and a poorly ventilated case, but seems stable even when in that "risky" 55-60 degree zone. Would probably give me 3.8-3.9 if I cooled it better.

Must admit, I've concluded that the top line CPUs from both manufacturers are there for people who want to see numbers and just *know* they have the best. But I don't think another 200MHz would actually make any odds to my experience with this PC :)

Needing it aside, I'd love to have a go with a 1.325 VID chip :D But something tells me they're a pretty small fraction of what's on the market...

Thank everyone.

I have to wait a month anyway because I get free delivery then, much nicer without that 9 pounds added on the end..

I get my Phenom II 810 on 3.6GHz stable on air and stock fan so I don't know how you can't get higher with 955?

As a further question, for new RAM what would you suggest? I currently have a cheap 4GB from Kingston but I'm looking for a nice upgrade less than 150 pounds.

Thanks again.

What speed is your current ram ? TBH if its half decent the extra spent to replace won't be worth it, put it towards a graphics upgrade for better VFM/PPP.
Otherwise, I have no hesitation in recommending Gskill :)

You may do better to go up to 8 gig of slow (e.g. 9-9-9-24) ram rather than look for just 4 gig of performance stuff.

8 gig is a true marvel to behold if you run memory heavy apps, loving mine :D

Have you tried unlocking the full L3 cache on your Phenom II X4 810??
