Advice / opinions from those with a work horse and a weekend toy

If you think like that, then you'll probably ride the bike as you should have been riding it in the first place, i.e. safely :)

Yeah, I don't think I'd be one of these heros that you see on sunny weekends. My main concern is that in the two bike accidents I've seen it was a SMIDSY moment with a car knocking the rider off before they knew what was happening.

I cannot say for sure but I do not think I could run 2 cars in a daily/toy manner. No doubt about it I would want to be in my toy all the time and just loathe being in a work horse when I have a nice car at home.

I hate being in hire cars when on holiday and wish I had my car :D

I could do a bike and a car though, they are different enough that I would not have that "other car" feeling :p

Depends on your usage, my drive to work is very dull (motorway followed by busy town) only on a really nice summer's day would it be made interesting by taking the MX5 with the roof down etc. If you can discipline yourself into only using the "fun" car at the weekends it'll make it feel all the more special when you take it out at the weekend!

Never a dull moment in the S2000, even sitting in traffic I can sit back and stare into the sky :D

Horses for courses though, hate traffic and congestion as much as the next guy but I still enjoy being in the car :)

It's sods law that the day you take the daily you get an open section and something that would have been good fun/interesting had you been in the toy......FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUU moment :P There is nothing more yawnworthy than saying to someone "haha yeah well, I've got a X at home!"

I'm so glad I don't have to commute any more I hated driving the Integra to work, simply because of the people not paying attention and seeing stupid avoidable bumps / accidents everyday on the way to work!

I consider this all the time, although in a slightly different context (Two people sharing two cars, but I don't necessarily need one through the week).

My solution was something the could still be fun as the daily driver, something like an E46 318 - cheap enough to run, buy and insure, but the right driving dynamics to at least have a bit of fun if the opportunity arises.

The weekend car would still be something that could ultimately be practical (I have my heart set on an RX8).

We used to own two cars, i.e. a mk2 MX5 and an Ibiza.
The Ibiza was used by the missus for commuting to work whilst I was taking the train into central London, then on weekends we'd use the MX5.

We then decided to go for a single car, partly because of the arrival of our son. Thinking that we'd be able to combine fun and praticality we bought a 330i. Turned out to be a pretty bad decision, as whilst the 330i was VERY competent, it was nothing like as fun as the MX5. Hence why the 330i was recently replaced by a diesel powered motorised sofa (Volvo).

When I finally get back to doing the job that I should be doing and getting paid for it, another MX5 is well up my hit list of toys to buy again.

If you have the cash, IMO a toy and a fun car is a great plan.

Gives you the ideal excuse to have a naff "My other car is a..." bumper sticker I guess :D

I only have a parking space for one motor where I live and there is no chance I'd leave even a bucket on the street

Do you not worry that now the two of you has become the three of you that an MX-5 wouldn't get as much use as it used to due to the limitation of not being able to all go out in it?

You don't need to have a shed to drive all week though. It'd make more sense to me to go for something comfortable to commute in and then something less comfortable/more sporty for the weekend. I may just be getting old but there's no way I could live with even a new mx5 as a daily driver as they're just to small and noisey.

Depends. The job I'd prefer to get will be for a consultancy firm and is likely to involve some travel. That would offer both the salary to support a good 2nd car and the opportunity to use it.
If I were based in London, but still with the salary, have to say that I'd consider one for a laugh as a weekend toy, but I'm not really sure I'd get that much time in it.
At least we now have the motorised sofa as complimentary car.

I like having two cars because as mentioned you can mess about with one at the weekend and if it's not running on Sunday evening it's not the end of the world. There's not much point having a fun car if you can't get stuck into a big job without worrying about getting work the next week. The same goes for getting work done gradually over a few evenings.

Then you end up with a compromised car, though. I'll stick to a 911 and an S-Class as they suit the 2 tasks the best that i would care to afford.

If i ditched my share of the 911, and sold the S-Class, i could i guess run a better S-Class, or be sat in an exec rather than luxury class car in my daily grind.

I think 2 cars are worth it if your cirumstances are that you have to sit in one of them for lengthy periods. It depends on the individual though. This said i am fast losing interest in anything other than waftability when it comes to cars, so the second car in my case is becoming redundant.

Dunno about cars, but I have 3 bikes;

Workhorse/Commuter - 1992 CBR 600F, streetifightered, looks battered and not worth nicking. I am happy to park this up in bike bays in London, and don't mind racking up miles on it as it's not that expensive to service.

450 Supermoto, shortly getting off road wheels for it so I can use it green laning as well, purely for fun on the weekends, off road and on track

1000cc V-Twin sports - This is purely for fun, weekend rides, as well as track days.

Cost wise the workhorse is the cheapest to service, 2nd most expensive in petrol, not particularly exciting.

The VTR is the thirstiest for petrol by far, costs more to service than the other 2, but is great fun.

The supermoto is cheapest per service, but needs servicing most regularly and is probably on par with the V-Twin, cheapest petrol wise.

I'm also thinking of adding a 4th to the stable at some point, pure track bike :D

Could I make do with 1? Probably
Would I trade up 3 bikes to get one which is the current in all singing and dancing model? Not a chance.

Cost wise means I stump up for tax and insurance, but not having to worry about having my nice bikes nicked or damaged more than makes up for it for me

exactly.

having a car i couldnt give a toss about has its advantages.

'oh brilliant, someones opened their door into me, again. oh well. ' :D
